Death Cafes provide an informal opportunity 'to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives'. They are group directed discussions of death with no agenda, objectives or themes.
People are often surprised by the touching, useful and quite often light-hearted conversations. As a society, we rarely discuss death, even though the inevitability of death is the only thing we can predict in life. A Death Cafe is a useful forum for everyone. For any human being, no matter what their stage in life, an awareness of the presence of death can help us live our lives more fully. Consideration of and planning for 'end of life matters can lift a real burden from our family and friends.
They are life-affirming events, but sensitive discussions are of course possible so please bear this in mind. Participants in a recent cafe held in Camberwell described the gathering as 'welcoming, thought-provoking, supportive, positive, friendly, honest, safe, disinhibiting, helpful, clarifying, open and revealing'.
Everyone is welcome and the event is FREE, but you must book a ticket in advance via this link

These are discussion groups rather than grief support or counselling session
Ann Kenrick is founder of End of Life Matters. She has considerable experience of End of Life issues personally and professionally as CEO of the charity, the Charterhouse, supporting older people with housing and care needs. She is also a member of the End of Life Education Committee at St Christopher's Hospice.

From the popular tech journalist and Movers and Shakers podcaster, also known across the world for documenting his journey with rescue dog #SophiefromRomania, comes a moving memoir in search of the truth behind his isolated childhood and absent father.
Rory Cellan-Jones knew he was the child of a love affair between two BBC employees. But until his mother died and he found a file labelled ‘For Rory’ he had no idea of the extent of their relationship, and why his unconventional childhood had so tested the bond between him and his mother. ‘For Rory,’ his mother had written on the file, ‘in the hope that it will help him understand how it really was …’
Rory Cellan-Jones was the BBC’s principal technology correspondent until 2021. He now writes an influential Substack column on medical innovation and tech. Through this and his 320k+ twitter followers @ruskin147 he spreads awareness of technological developments in the fields of medicine, health care and – more specifically – Parkinson’s. Together with Jeremy Paxman and several others he has begun a new podcast on Parkinson’s called Movers and Shakers.

Airswimming is coming to The White Bear!

    17th-21st October.

This dark comedy is set in the England after the First World War, and is inspired by the lives of two women, Miss Kitson and Miss Baker, who were each in locked away in a hospital for the “criminally insane”, one for wishing to dress like a man and the other for bearing an illegitimate child. United by circumstance, they were not released until the 1970s. The fluid timeline flows between the harsh linear world of the hospital and a world of their imagination. By turns funny, chilling and moving, Airswimming reminds us of the cruelly treated, forgotten women of these generations.
