155A Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by South London based artist, Julian Woodward.
His paintings synthesise his immediate environment, looking for universality and timelessness. His practice centres around space and light, and how this can create theatre and reverie in suburban scenes. These contemporary works are inspired by the legacy of traditional landscape painting.
Working Process
Subject matter comes from walks around the local neighbourhood with a sketchbook. Coming across a place that grabs his attention, Julian will often start with quick pencil sketches to capture something essential about the location. He will then return for a longer period with pastel or oil paint and a home made mobile easel that allows him to work on pavements without blocking people from passing. These studies form the reference material for paintings made later in the studio. Sometimes, a circular process of drawing from a painting and then painting from the drawing helps to refine the idea. Paintings can be executed quickly, and at other times the process continues over several months of repeated scraping back and reworking.
