Numerous black and white illustrations throughout the volumes. A very good set, with some fading to the spines and foxing to the page edges. This the best edition of my books is, of right, inscribed to my dear friend John Forster, biographer of Oliver Goldsmith, in affectionate acknowledgment of his counsel, sympathy, and faithful friendship during my whole literary life - Dedication page of The Pickwick Papers. "The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts, there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. Dickens eventually came round to the idea that an elegant edition could raise the stature of his writings." (Oxford Reader's Companion to Dickens)

Lady Chatterley's Lover - DH Lawrence FIRST EDITION via The Vanguard Library No 22: 1953 One of the most extraordinary literary works of the twentieth century, Lady Chatterley's Lover was banned in England and the United States after its initial publication in 1928. The unexpurgated edition did not appear in America until 1959, after one of the most spectacular legal battles in publishing history. With her soft brown hair, lithe figure and big, wondering eyes, Constance Chatterley is possessed of a certain vitality. Yet she is deeply unhappy; married to an invalid, she is almost as inwardly paralyzed as her husband Clifford is paralyzed below the waist. It is not until she finds refuge in the arms of Mellors the game-keeper, a solitary man of a class apart, that she feels regenerated. Together they move from an outer world of chaos towards an inner world of fulfilment. Carlotta McBride - Charles Orson Gorham FIRST PRINTING by Secker & Warburg 1959. Samuel Pepys Plague Fire Revolution by Margarette Lincoln National Maritime Museum 1st EDITION 2015 This book, published to coincide with a major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum to mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London, centres on Samuel Pepys (1633 1703), the famous diarist and the greatest administrator of the Stuart Age. Not only a passionate diarist, Pepys was also a prolific correspondent who lived through and wrote about all the key events and leading individuals of his time: the Restoration of Charles II, the Great Plague, the Fire of London, the raid of the Dutch fleet in the river Medway, the King’s mistresses. Through a series of essays by leading experts, this publication reveals the rich diversity of his career and interests – from the theatre, to advances in science and development of the Royal Navy. His life was so utterly entwined with the extraordinary period he lived through – he was even a witness to the beheading of Charles I – that the book becomes a portrait of the age. Each chapter has two or three essays followed by discussion of specific objects and paintings. Our Generation A Pictorial Record of Britain In Our Own Times. With a foreward by E. Royston Price.
