155A Gallery is delighted to present a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by South London based artist, Julian Woodward.
His paintings synthesise his immediate environment, looking for universality and timelessness. His practice centres around space and light, and how this can create theatre and reverie in suburban scenes. These contemporary works are inspired by the legacy of traditional landscape painting.
Working Process
Subject matter comes from walks around the local neighbourhood with a sketchbook. Coming across a place that grabs his attention, Julian will often start with quick pencil sketches to capture something essential about the location. He will then return for a longer period with pastel or oil paint and a home made mobile easel that allows him to work on pavements without blocking people from passing. These studies form the reference material for paintings made later in the studio. Sometimes, a circular process of drawing from a painting and then painting from the drawing helps to refine the idea. Paintings can be executed quickly, and at other times the process continues over several months of repeated scraping back and reworking.
Serena Rowe is a figurative painter based in South London.
Her work exudes an innate love of paint and the act of painting: she works quickly and instinctively, painting in intense bursts in order to capture a fleeting and exact feeling. She has always been drawn to the natural world, to found images, to childhood toys and uses them as a starting point to explore her emotional state.
Serena trained at the Florence Academy of Art, following graduation from the University of Edinburgh in 2000. More recently, she completed the postgraduate Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School. She exhibits her work regularly in the UK, including the RA Summer Show, New English Art Club (NEAC) annual exhibition and in the Scottish Show at Panter & Hall.
Soon Comes Night is the second solo show to be held at the gallery for Serena Rowe.
‘Refuge and Meanings’
A conversation between two painters, Julie Held LG NEAC RSW and Rachel Mercer
4th - 21st September 2025
Open: Thursday - Sunday 12pm - 5pm
Through painting and drawing both artists explore gardens and shopping centres, these subjects reflect two of the many facets of London living. They are places where people seek refuge and pleasure, both hold promises of the future. Gardens reflect the cycle of life; shopping malls allow one to project our wishes and desires, and provide another place of mystery, pleasure and delight. Julie Held probes the threshold between our inner and outer world. While Rachel Mercer is motivated by the action and movement of figures through space. Both artists bring these subjects to life through lively colour and brushwork.

With a mixture of rigour and experimentation, technicality and playfulness, Kit Line makes sculptures from a variety of reclaimed and salvaged materials including steel, timber, plywood, and disposable cutlery.
Painted worlds of Clare Haward and Grant Watson
Dogcat and Landscapes arose out of studio visits and conversations between two painters who find resonance with each other's work. The familiar and the strange come together in works that each artist may not have thought to share
Both artists are South London based and elected members of the New English Art Club, based at Mall Galleries.
Clare Haward teaches a Monday painting class at the local Dulwich Art Group.
