  1. You're right - i thought it was high too. Here are some figures over a number of years. 5 is on the high end. It's always about 100x fewer than people who are killed by cars https://www.nationalworld.com/news/politics/pedestrians-killed-dangerous-cyclists-road-deaths-3812845 You can have the whole your quote to read back there too. Deaths per mile traveled is a meaningless statistic to compare between bicycles. Cars spend ~20% of their time on motorways which are significantly safer. This is exactly my point. People cycling on pavements is annoying, but it's not particularly dangerous.
  2. You're not seriously telling me that you look at that graph and you think that the problem with danger on our roads is cyclists?
  3. This is why I said *private* vehicles. Also, no idea where you get your stats from, in 2020, HGVs accounted for 140 deaths. Cars, 559, bicycles, 5. It's also why HGVs are held to significantly higher safety standards and licensing requirements than other vehicles - because the authorities recognise that the larger the vehicle the greater the risk. Agree - but in a world of limited resources, there should be a risk based approach to identifying and mitigating possible danger. Charming. The good people of East Dulwich are so lucky to have a gatekeeper such as yourself.
  4. A 3 tonne private vehicle on a suburban street is never suitable. That shouldn't be controversial.
  5. That's exactly the point. No one here knows what caused that accident. All we know is the result of accident has resulted in a loss of life. This is because the vehicle that was being used was wholly unsuitable, dangerous and has a huge capacity for causing harm. The amount of damage that someone on a bicycle would never be able to cause - whether they are on the pavement or not.
  6. Oooh apologies. Please let me know how many posts I need in order to have an opinion on this. It absolutely has relevance. Cycling on pavements can be annoying, but the level of risk is far, far smaller than people driving tanks around a city - as that incident in Wimbledon shows.
  7. ...and had they been in a normal sized car, it's unlikely it would've had such tragic consequences.
