  1. Congratulations. Job well done. It'll take some getting used to, but what a great resource!

As I understand it, this is entirely voluntary...but even if it isn't, its still to be applauded. I agree, people should be constructive in their criticism or suggestions, recognising that humans are behind this, and its a community resource.

This is a unique asset, and I don't know of any other neighbourhood with a system quite as well organised and useful as this. There is Next Door, but that's commercial, and not nearly as useful.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

  2. Local musician Jon Magidsohn plays at the Ivy House on 13th May.

?You wouldn?t think A World Without Corners was a debut album. Inhabiting a world that sounds adjacent to the soft-rock of ?70s California and more contemporary versions of that timeless sound, there?s a conviction, sophistication and depth to Jon?s tangled songs and voice."

    -- Martin Aston, music journalist.

  3. It's been a long time since we bought a telly. And we're flummoxed. We don't want to spend a lot of money (200 - ?350), We're looking for 39 or 40" -- what used to be classified as large, which is now apparently considered small.

It needs to be easy to set up and use, have Freeview and all the streaming apps, and OK sound/picture quality, and ideally with wifi. We don't use Alexa. Can anyone offer advice on brands? There's too much to choose from!

What brand do you have? And do you like it?

  4. We insulated, and changed all of our windows, etc... And now have just installed a hot water tank, which we'll connect to solar power (Solar PV). So this means our gas consumption will just be for heat...total cost will be less than 2K (though my husband did some of the work himself), as we can use our existing combi boiler just for heat. Putting in a ground source pump wasn't feasible nor was an air source one as it would require lifting up all of the floors, and we have a small garden. But at least this plan will reduce our carbon footprint and our gas and electricity bills overall. You can also get solar thermal and not need solar PV.
  5. Does anyone have advice for walk-in options for a PCR test for pre-travel? Most of the ones I've seen say post it Monday-Friday, but I'm travelling on a Tuesday so that won't work with the 72 hour limit!

Anywhere nearby I can walk in for a reasonable amount? I don't have a car.

    Thanks

  6. Hello! I'm starting a podcast -- basically an Agony Aunt for apathy. It will eventually source questions from the general public, but I need a few plants to help get it going, as I want 4 episodes pre-recorded before it launches.

I need a couple of people who are concerned about a social or environmental issue, or even a local issue, but don't know where to start to do something about it.

I already have a short-list of issues that I want to start with, but if you have another, I'm happy to look at it.

Please DM me and I can send more info.

    Thanks!

  7. Our sweet cat "Fig" has gone missing. He doesn't go out at night and certainly not in the rain, and he rarely strays more than a couple of gardens from home. He's never even gone out front to cross the road. Please keep an eye out for him, or look in any sheds, particularly if you live in the triangle between Bellenden Rd, Soame street and Avondale rise. There is a similar cat in the area with blue eyes, its not him! He has amber/yellow eyes. He may respond to his name so do try calling.
  8. Need to get a new car, and would prefer to buy electric, but there don't seem to be very many charging points around! Also, non-electric cars seem to park in the parking bays where there is a charge point AND the charge points sometimes don't work. Does Southwark Council or London plan on investing more in these? What do people on here do?
  9. thanks for advice -- I don't want to find a new cleaner, and its not fair to her to let her go in order to find someone more local, as she's been working for us for some time. Yes, we could do our own cleaning, but long ago decided that having a cleaner is one of the secrets to a happy marriage and with busy lives it helps a lot. We have been known to forgo certain things in order to budget for said cleaner...as I said, we don't own a car, and are not profligate in our spending.

So adding a few quid on a week doesn't sound like a lot, but we do run a tight budget....The irony is that the weekly cost of parking adds up to almost as much as an annual amount for a resident's car, but we can't get one of those.

I still think it's madness. On our stretch of the road, there is no pressure on parking spaces at all during the day, it's too far from the station to attract people wanting to use it for commuting.

  10. So....we don't own a car, never have done. But we have a cleaner who visits, by car, once a week. She comes exactly during the times that the controlled parking zone will apply to. (she comes 9:30 - 12:30 -- restrictions seem to be from 11 - 1). Buying a pass once per week gets awfully expensive. As she doesn't live here, we can't buy her an annual pass, + she would presumably need that somewhere else.

And while the is quite a pain for us, I can't imagine what it will mean for people who have carers who come, say, to give them lunch, for example. Is it possible to get any exemptions? What do people suggest?
