Make your own Pocket Sundial in this carefully crafted learning adventure into time and space. Hosted by Curiosity Workshops. It’s surprising what can be learnt from a little adjustable stick on a flat surface. Many will be familiar with Sundials as an ancient clock, but did you know it can also be used As a compass? As a calendar? As a GPS system? Unlocking the keys to this powerful pocket gadget requires insights that span astronomy, maths, languages and craft, taking a journey from ancient wisdom to the frontiers of contemporary knowledge and mysteries. The Sundial was getting so much interest at the Curiosity Workshops table that it was the obvious choice for an instrument that people could be involved in making and exploring for themselves. Afterall, that little adjustable stick isn’t called a gnomon - ‘one that knows’ - for nothing... *** AGES: This particular workshop is tailored towards 6-11 year olds, to allow us to explore together subjects of astronomy, geometry and mathematics. Parents, kids and big kids of all ages are still very welcome to join or accompany. Alternatively, please get in touch to be informed of workshops tailored towards older age groups. *** PRICE: To make this as accessible as possible, a donation of choice is requested per participant. This is on top of a £5 fee for the kit, tailormade by Curiosity Workshops. *** TIMINGS: The workshop will start at 11.00am, running until 12.30pm, with a 5 minute break for those that would like. *** LOCATION: The wonderful people of Sydenham Library (run by Calico Projects) have offered the necessary space, tables and chairs outside the library if the weather is good. A bit of sun would be a nice touch. But failing that, the workshop will take place inside the library event space. *** REGISTRATION: Spaces are limited to 12, so to reseve your space, please make the £5 kit fee. Redunds will be possible up to 24hrs in advance. There's more information at www.CuriosityWorkshops.com, or feel free to get in touch directly with [email protected] on 07445533749 or @curiosityworkshops on instagram. Ready? Let's go!
