Children's Christmas Books - any favourites?
redmonkey replied to Knomester's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ooh I love talking about books . . . Not sure if its still in print but Astrid Lindgren also wrote Christmas at Bullerby which is as Christmassy as it gets. Harvey Slumphemburger's Christmas Present by John Burningham kind of left field but very sweet, A Child's Christmas in Wales by Dlylan Thomas for older kids and what about Petethe Cat Saves Christmas? -

Wow, I thought maybe you were some sort of freelance vigilante. That is very bad. -

Thanks for taking the time to explain this James. And thanks for initiating the whole campaign. I'm sorry I wasn't really aware of it until a few days ago. You sound quite annoyed with Charter. Do I need to choose a campaign to support? Redjam said it was up to the DfE. Will voices from the community make a difference now? Also, have you published your reasons for choosing Habadasher's over Charter? I saw a post in which you said you'd put the reasons in the first post in this thread but I couldn't find them. -

Fair enough. That's democracy I suppose. Ish. I'll abandon this thread and get back to thinking about things I can control. -

In that case will there be some sort of meeting in which they set out there cases to local people and we can ask questions? Its quite hard to decide what would be best by just reading a leaflet. Could James Barber organise this? My children are a long way from secondary school still. Do we get a say or is it just the parents of older children? -

Hello. Can someone explain the fact that although the local council say they've chosen Habs as the provider, Charter were flyering outside Bessemer this morning, advertising their bid? Are they also still hoping to build on the hospital site or what? -
My son was at the Montessori for two years part time and I also have some experience working in a range of nurseries. I can assure you it is absolutely one of the best. It is much more focussed on learning than a lot of nurseries without being too formal. Ash who runs the school is a trained school teacher and montessori teacher and a lot of the staff are trained montessori teachers rather than simply childcare workers. They do amazing topics during the year, (Space, The Continents and Animals) and the children are very school ready when they leave. THe staff do seem to stay for a long time and are very caring. There is also a lovely family atmosphere; Ash's mum and dad both work there! Adrianna who runs blue class is phenomenally committed to her job and communication with parents is great. Forrest school is a fantastic experience which my son still remembers fondly. I would say the only downside is the outside space and also that if you work it does not provide a whole day of child care. Also there is no kitchen so the children have to take a packed lunch.

We ran a hose from upstairs! Also used a second hand birthpool in a box. I am 5'7" and the smaller size was fine.

Awful experience at GMs hairdressers :(
redmonkey replied to Jellybeanz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My hairdresser, Julie, is fabulous. She is a mum who no longer wants to work in a salon but has years of salon experience including working with Vidal Sassoon. She will come to your house and her prices are extremely reasonable. She doesn't do colour, but I just have that done elsewhere. Her number is 07771618923. -

Kings or Tommys for giving birth - first baby
redmonkey replied to CocoC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would like to point out that we are unbelievably lucky to be able to choose between these two world class teaching hospitals. The scans at King's are beyond compare. Most twelve week scans in the uk re just dating scans and maybe testing nuchal folds. At Kings' they check everything that is scientifically possible which is very reassuring. I gave birth to my first baby at Tommy's which was fine. My second was a home birth with the Lanes who were amazing, then I transferred briefly to King's. I would say the wards are less spacious at kings but both places were stifflingly hot! Good luck whatever you do, but if you can get the Lanes I would keep them!
