Are they, John Lewis, still refusing to pay the cleaners the living wage - not very ethical at all!

  2. I am probably resurrecting a much discussed subject on here so forgive me, but the lack of ventilation and any form of comfort cooling in the gym at Fusion Dulwich is really unpleasant on most summer days but this morning was stifling and made me feel so uncomfortable I left. I have complained to Fusion about it but is there anyone in leisure management out there who knows whether there is something more that can be done to get some improvements made. Feels like a service standard must be being breached. I can never understand how the otherwise rather good refurb could be allowed to happen without ventilation being addressed. There are loads of windows in there but none of them open. madness.
  3. I gave up on the email route, and it appears that to register and use Patient Access you need to have proof of ID verified by the surgery before you have authorised use. So I ended up with the old phone and 20 minutes of repeated calling at 8am today paid off. I got a call back at 3.30pm today and an appointment at 6pm. Amazing. Though it does all feel rather random and inconsistent which isn't the best standard to attain when you are feeling ill. Anyways will do as Cora recommends as well.
  4. I was told yesterday that you cannot make an appointment by email despite what their website says and their earlier communication about email appointment booking on the forum. You have to ring. They told me this by email! I totally agree that the management of this centre is appalling.
  5. One bike stolen and another with half sawn-through frame, disturbed culprit at about 5.30am but too late. Locks untouched just cut through the frames! Locked in front garden where they have been safely kept for many many years. Hey ho. Be vigilant everyone, even a v.v expensive lock isn't going to stop them.
  6. Yes really good plants and a good selection of perennials that you don't see in London garden centres. You can buy on line too at certain times of the year. Very good quality and well-priced I think. Check out Sussex Prairie too - its much nearer than Beth's place, a very different garden but nice little selection of unusual plants for sale. And if you want to indulge yourself inspirationally do one of the day long courses at Great Dixter - sublime.
  7. I saw a notice in the window of the Mag pub (is it still called that?) advertising foreign language clubs, French and other Euro languages, taking place in the pub for a couple of hours in the evening once a week. Presumably largely conversational. Has anyone used them or got any feedback about them please?
  8. It all seems to be working well on Hindmans. I asked for my blue bin to be returned as it was far too big and they very promptly came and collected it. Others are doing likewise as the blue monsters seem to have all but disappeared from this end of Hindmans. Certainly e-mail comms with LBS worked well. Two blue boxes work fine for me and they are always collected though whether that is weekly or fortnightly I am not sure. As a crusher I never seem to have a problem with them being over full.

The only suggestion for improvement from here is that the green food bags would be better if they were a little stronger. In my experience if they are anything more than half-full in the brown container then they split when you are getting them out

It sounds wonderful doesn't it. I trust the sun was shining and there was poetry reading in the play ground.......

But of course any new school will start on a ride of high teacher morale and good pupil behaviour so unless we are to endlessly recreate and rebuild our schools I wouldn't be so quick to jump to the conclusion that this new model is a long term solution to tackling the challenges of inner city schooling, improving education for all and building strong and cohesive communities.

The questions that I think you need to ask yourself are what happens to those schools and their pupils that are not in the supposed vanguard of free schools? Less resources certainly, less attention definitely, unable to compete with higher teacher salaries that free schools can pay? Most likely. And who might the pupils be in those schools? Not the children of Toby Young or the equivalent media and professional classes leading the new free school movement you can be absolutely certain of that.

  10. Building a school based on a flawed consumerist concept of supposed parental choice (or control/segregation?)) and political fad would seem to me to be an unsustainable endeavour in the extreme regardless of education, place or site. A stark 21st century British contradiction - we are told to embrace the economic, social and cultural benefits of diversity but in school we seem to merrily perpetuate and reinforce social, religious and class divisions.
  11. I am very surprised that no one has commented on the new screens in the gym yet. The scroll pattern repeat taken from the mezzanine balustrade is a bit pastiche for my tastes and unnecessary but apart from that I like the way they define the space in the gym. And they look very sturdy indeed. I do like our new gym very much, though it still gets quite stuffy in there despite the recent air conditioning improvements.

Specialising in showing low budget gangster movies I hope.............................I look forward to it opening. No keystone cops though please.

I hope they splash a lick of paint on the outside though or festoon the wire protection nets with banners and flags. That would be cool. Maybe Iceland could do the same and lighten the mood of the earnest shoppers.
