I'd pay to see that, but surely it'd be 'shanks pony' no ?

  2. It's OK as much as schloss gloss goes, but with so many films made or tweaked within a billimeter of reality, right here in the UK, they have to come surely

What is suprising is that the 'mericans turn out to let us see them , sans CGI. I mean Tom hanks looks like he's permanently CGI'd and others who I didn't even recognise were there (my son pointed out who was who after- huh really, ok !)

Gorgeous Di Caprio stands out wherever he goes, I could lick him for hours, but Brad? What's happened to Brads neck, is he beefing up again for another film. He's a hunk of something for sure

Lastly, there's something of the Village Fete about some of our British actors. I like them in most parts, but they're slightly mis matched undies and dogs on the sofas, no ?

It's part of the charm I suppose

Saint Steven was funny, he knew he was messing with their heads

  3. Ok mourning its loss aside (it WILL be back)

I've been eating here regularly since 1995 (I think) and through all my life changes since then, it's been an odd kind of joy, a constant.

If i'd been away when I was single, i'd return to London and eat here. It confirmed I was home. Nothing beat the anonymity of sitting on the ground level, eating and gazing at the passing human traffic. Tea & food along with the constant buzz of the place.

I also had some very odd, almost kafkaesque experiences in there.

One day, whilst eating alone, the pay phone on the wall above my table rang. It was the one on the mirrored wall, pre refurb 1 days

The waiter answered (leaning over the table) listened and grunted the same 'uhh' repetitively, he then put down the phone and walked briskly outside. He returned, took up centre position at the service counter and stared ahead, without any expression

The phone rang again, this time he was rather more animated "UHH..UHH..UHH" with a few added high speed barks down the phone. Again he hung up and this time, with another member of staff he sped outside. The thought that someone had gone without paying crossed my mind, but with the meat BBQ area by the door, I feared for their chances

Both returned, both stoney faced and I ate on. The phone rang yet again, the waiter answered, only this time it was like a mad scene from The Pink Panther. The waiter became flushed red and highly animated, barking further down the phone. Again hanging up and with other members of staff in tow leaving the building. Only to yet again return, place himself centre as before and hold it together

The tension was palpable, but nothing yet slipped through his stoney exterior. I was best positioned to watch the whole event unfolding and I was intrigued

What broke the silence was a black uniformed man walking into the front lobby area. Not a notable uniform, just plain black. It could have been a private security or a similar type, but as it turns out he was a fire officer.

"Who's the manager here?" he enquired

The animated but keeping it together waiter/manager looked and paused, but just as he went to speak, the uniformed man spoke again

"No matter, Ladies and gentlemen please gather your belongings together quietly and leave THIS BUILDING IS ON FIRE"

To which the waiter/manager replied "No is OK...FIRE ONLY UPSTAIR"

It was divine, I nearly choked laughing. We left and as I did so I offered up and was relieved of a fiver.

The fire brigade had by then pulled up & a scene from a movie ensued, all high tech gadgets and fire officers, remote water cannons and cameras taking over

I stood in awe as flames and smoke licked off the roof, even gulping a little of that smoke unwittingly. Choking but somehow smiling as I made good my escape from the chaos

It closed for over a year after that, but like the Pheonix it was reborn. Pinker, smarter and with some irony, staff sporting "UPSTAIRS-DOWNSTAIRS" Tiger sponsored t-shirts

Lets hope it comes back, all pimped and glam but still with the soul it's always possessed

"HOW MANY, UPSTAIR" will be music to my ears

  4. Great institutions of London that close their doors for the last time.

Today I wear a black armband for the majestic and much lauded...

Wong Kei in Wardour Street W1

    Doors closed on Friday

    *quietly mops a tear*

I've been going here for 20 odd (and at times friggin mad) years. I'm genuinely heart broken, as this place has been a base line of comfort in this city

    God blees ya !

    Edited to ad link

  5. Oh fekk, did I have an overhang on Friday morning

A handful of Ibruprofen/paracetamol with half and half flat water/san pellegrino, got me through the first bit

However, halfway during a rather full on meeting I thought I was going to keel over

Nailed it at lunch with a bowl of Pho

Finally nailed it with the 'hair of the dog' later that evening

Irn Bru aside, is there actually a cure tho ?

  6. Oh come on, WD is terminally vanilla, it's the Tunbridge Wells of south london

I lived near there for long enough and i'm trying to think what I miss about the place

    Erm......ah oh yes

    Kurt's Coffee truck

Sausage rolls from the bakery. Actually I do miss the old bakery, when it had those orange lights, orange is my favourite colour

And the bookshop, which I do still use, so technically I don't miss it

I miss waiting at the traffic lights or taking my life in my own hands and crossing the Croxted road and barclays bank is a corker, yeah and the waiting in line in Tesco's

    I'm sure there's more

  7. On the driver gas

Do you stand vor'm generator car,

do you think well with anxious trepidation,

    that he now makes you worry;

But he does not do it, did you eight:

Take good tank timber, lumpy and dry,

not too small and not too big the chunks!

Whether soft, whether is hard not so important

    both are mixed properly secure.

    Then all hatches make dense,

otherwise you certainly get no gas,

because it's the same burn in generator

    and no power, the motor

    The seals halt 'always pure,

lubricating always them with graphite oil.

    Condensation let off early,

otherwise it makes the performance short.

The rust r?ttle vor'm refueling violently

    and stoch're vigorously after filling.

The hollow fire you can avoid by

and save the motor so Suffering.

Did you at all 'have thought good,

    driving also makes you joy.

The air vice 'is a always right,

remember this well, that must always be.

Also Use Turn You must not forget,

    really it would be presumptuous

    thinking, 's can' without geh'n

Immediately you will steh'n the motor

    Always thinking 'the generator driving,

well that the gas is mainly.

This will save yourself from worry

in your wood gas driving around.

(some things get weirdly better in translation)

  9. Don't over sand else you'll get back to the metal = corrosion

If you have got this far (to the metal) then a metal primer first should suffice. You can go over the area in quick drying car spray primer, if you're in a hurry

Then oil eggshell roller it, but be careful you don't go to thick and end up with a pitted finish. Personally i'd thin the eggshell a little (white spirit) and brush it out with a synthetic fine filament brush. Don't be tempted to try one heavy coat. The new 2012 VOC compliant paints 'cure' rather than dry, so a thick coat will make the cure process take longer. It will say 18 hrs between coats, it's possible but an extra day is better to allow the coats to harden up. 180 grit flour paper 'de-nib' sanding between coats will help ease the second on greatly. Dust down as you go

Store your brush in water between the coats, not white spirit, as this is a solvent and not a brush cleaner. When you go to reuse the brush, dry it gently with a lint free cloth and ease it with a little paint on a spare bit of clean board or wood. When the whole task is complete, clean your brush in water soluble 'Brush Cleaner' rinse in COLD water and wash with fairy liquid, rinse again. Hot water stiffens a brush to death

Two coats should suffice, but buy some decent paint. Best eggshell on the market is Little Green Co. I use Whites of Brockley & speak to John , every where else is run by muppets

    Hope this helps
