  1. Think that would be a really good idea to have a meeting or a debate or something - to see how the community feels. There has been posts on this forum which say that Save Southwark Woods doesn't really have local support.

Would someone on this Forum give me the name of a group or a person who supports the Council's cemetery strategy? Someone?

The person or group can even debate what we think is the strategy.

We think the council's strategy is to cut down trees, remove headstones, and dig up and mounding over graves to provide burial spaces in crushed construction waste on top of the buried dead or to provide space in confiscated graves above the remains of the previous occupants. We are sure it is to cut down trees cause they have done that already.

I think it should be someone who doesn't have a vested financial interest in the strategy. Then again, it would be nice to see Councillor Vicki Mills or her husband Gavin Edward or Fiona Colley defend their horrible, sinful, cynical and immoral actions.

    Any names?

Can someone on this forum tell me the name of a group or a person who supports the Council's cemetery strategy I.e. cutting down trees, removing headstones, and digging up and mounding over graves to provide burial spaces in crushed construction waste on top of the buried dead or to provide space in confiscated graves above the remains of the previous occupants? (Besides an undertaker, a council worker, a Councillor or contractor.)

    Thank you

  4. Report back from SSW table at the CoOp is near universal revulsion at tree cutting and disgust at local people's graves being dug up and mounded over. And not to mention the incedulity at the council leasing plots in crushed building waste above the remains of the dead.

Is there anyone who speaks up for the council plans and who will use their real name?

I know you are bitter old woman who's husband left her for her best friend and now you spend your days and nights in your drafty council flat (you lost the house to gambling and booze) in front of the computer.

  6. Loz, for instance, is an undertaker (or is it called a funeral director?). Shewill benefit directly from cutting down trees to make more plots available in the cemeteries. She should say that upfront and in every post so new people can see that. And state her name and business, and where she lives.

Barely working stand uo, probably going to be cremated (like 73% of Southwark's dead.) Save Southwark Woods

  7. Panda, Thank you for defending me but I don't mind.

The people who defend the council's plans, which are:

cut down 12 acres of woods,

    grind up dumped building waste

scrape clean the monuments of the dead (few in public areas)

cover the ground with that building waste

bury 100s of people in that building waste,

burying people on top of other dead,

in an area at risk of flooding

(and then when they have used up the 12 acres,

dig up the dead in the rest of the cemetery

rebury their bones deeper in the holes

and then lease off the plots...

then 75 years later dig up those bodies.

in rows upon rows of NCP style burials.

well, one of those posters works for the council, one is married to a Councillor, a couple work for the cemetery, one is an undertaker or funeral director, one main poster works for a major Council contractor, three are bitter with age and loneliness. Four just love ganging up on people, hidden in anonymity. A few don't like some incomer, newcomer, telling them what to do. There are other reasons why some people take such glee in seeing something others think is beautiful be destroyed.

  8. This is only a "draft" so maybe they are going to cart the building waste away and bring in topsoil.

I believe the Council is going to reuse two thirds of the illegally dumped building waste as cover for the 700 "new" grave plots.

Not only will local people have their families' graves covered over with other dead people, the newly buried dead people will be on top of other dead people and buried in building waste.

Perhaps the Council can come in here and tell me I'm wrong.

Document - REMEDIATION STRATEGY REPORT - DRAFT

3.2 PROPOSED REMEDIAL STRATEGY ? CL:AIRE DEFINITION OF WASTE CODE OF PRACTICE

Based on the findings of the various previous site investigation reports there appears to be the potential to

reuse a substantial volume of the 2003 Stockpile Made Ground to help facilitate the proposed re-profiling of

the site to provide additional burial space. SEC understands that SKM have previously estimated that

    2,500m3

of material requires off site disposal which would leave ~4,500m3 for potential re-use on site. In

order to realise the reuse of what is currently considered to be unlicensed ?waste?, employment of the

CL:AIRE Code of Practice (CoP) is proposed as an appropriate remedial strategy. The CoP provides a clear,

consistent and efficient process which enables the reuse of excavated materials (both contaminated and noncontaminated)

on-site or their movement between sites. Use of the CoP supports the sustainable and cost

effective development of land and it can provide an alternative to Environmental Permits or Waste

    Exemptions.

The CoP allows determination on a site specific basis, when treated excavated waste can cease to be waste

    for a particular use.

  9. Funeral for Southwark Woods was today and it was a fantastic event - 40 people - maybe more - coming and going -

If this weren't for something so sad it would have been a lot of fun.

Just horrible to see the large trees cut down, the chainsaws now cutting into the non-trees. Once they clear the hill, the mound of building waste will be "processed" on the site. Mashed up and put back on top of graves to make new clean graves. People will now be buried in ground-up building waste on top of tens of thousands of dead. I don't know if the new renters need to be told that. I don't see anything on the COuncil website that warns them of that

Yesterday, we learned that Harriet Harman wrote a strongly worded letter to Darren Merrill letting him know she had written a strongly worded letter and that she would remind everyone at a later date that she had written a strongly worded letter. It involved flooding on Ryedale.

    look at the video.

  10. Here is a video of Harriet Harman's party cutting down trees in Camberwell Old Cemetery today:

Harriet Harman kinda commented on cutting of trees in Camberwell Cemeteries in a tweet:

Grt to discuss more local burial spaces & planting more trees in C?well Cemeteries w @MerrillDarren @WildLondon"

  11. Save Southwark Woods campaign will not sacrifice any open land to save woods and graves in Camberwell Old Cemetery and on One Tree Hill in Camberwell New Cemetery.

That means the allotments, the rec, the nursery site and it means we will not accept digging up or mounding over any grave.

From what I know, Southwark Labour has kept the Rec, Nunhead Cemetery, and the allotments on the "table". Time to say: These places need permanence.

Tomorrow morning we demonstrate again at the destruction of trees, undergrowth and graves at Camberwell Old Cemetery. Meet at the gates at 9AM. SE22 0RU

  12. Photo attached is of Woodvale side of Camberwell Old Cemetery built on dirt mounded over public graves, and leased off for 50 years, with a maximum extension to 100 years.

"Oh, and I think cutting down (some) trees, mainly unplanned scrub growth, is acceptable to meet the borough's burial needs, particularly where this sits with a programme of re-planting."

The goal of Save Southwark Woods is to preserve the nature and heritage of Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries, with respect for the dead. No to mounding over graves. No to digging up graves. No to removal of headstones. Yes to woods and undergrowth.

  13. CONSENT / PERMISSION TO CUT DOWN TREES OR DO OTHER MAJOR WORK

Read the letter that Council worker Rebecca Towers sent to the Chancellor of the Diocese of Southwark and the Chancellor's reply. It shows the Council does not have permission.

    http://www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/evidence/4591683001

The Council is free to publish letters from the Church.

The tree they cut down is only a few feet from the edge of Area Z which means it is on consecrated ground. They don't have permission to cut down trees on consecrated ground. That is why i mentioned it.

Southwark Council sets a bad example for its residents.
