  1. Totally agree with DulwichFox. I think the real problem is that most 'managers'/staff members don't actually know (or care) how to look after their beer
  2. Having spent the last few days enjoying the delights of a number of local hostelries, I came to the conclusion that the standard of beer, on the whole, leaves a lot to be desired. While the EDT has a good range available, the standard is poor (every time I taste one of their beers I think it is off). The standard of beer in The Bishop and Victoria Inn is aslo questionable in my opinion while Franklins only ever has one beer available (although it seems to be pretty well kept). The Palmerston's beer is always pretty good but is really a restaurant while Hoopers, also good, is out of the way. There has been a lot of discussion on here regarding 'The Actress' and it seems that the management are attempting to fill this obvious gap in the market but it's important that not only a good range of beers are sold (hopefully rotating a few smaller breweries)the beer actually has to be well kept and looked after. It doesn't matter what beers or how many a pub sells, it really is all about the quality.
  3. Does anyone have the latest news regarding the refurb of The Uplands?
  4. Is there a planned opening date for the pub?
  5. Can't wait for it to open. There's no doubt that Scott (don't know him personally but seems to be a great landlord) has the knack of opening pubs that are a massive improvement and greatly enhance the local area. I know he plans to have rooms above the pub but does anyone know what the plan is with regards to the style of the pub? Beers/decor/food etc??
  6. If you don't fancy having to go into zone 1 you can take the 484 bus to lewisham and then DLR to Canary Wharf. This takes approx 45 minutes door to door.
  7. If I were you I would live as close to Lordship Lane as possible. That way you will be on the doorstep of the groundbreaking Adventure Bar, the atmospheric Magdala, the chav free Bishop and the countless organic bookmakers and take away restaurants. You'll have to pay a premium for your house but it's definately worth it.
  8. The Crown & Greyhound is undoubtedly a lovely pub in a great location and is perfect for a pint after a walk through the park. However, over the last few months I've noticed that things have started to slip quite drastically. Different ales often run out, service is slow (without a smile), plates are never cleared up (particularly in the garden during the summer) and the quality of the staff leaves a lot to be desired. I realise that many of them might be students but you would at least expect them to actually notice who is next in the queue, smile and have at least an idea about the drinks they are serving. The place really is resting on its laurels.
  9. A beer festival sounds fantastic. I can't agree though with those who've suggested Youngs, Shepherd Neame and Fullers beers. You can get those anywhere (even in Sainsbury's) and surely the idea of a beer festival is to be able to try unusual beers from smaller independant breweries.
  10. I went along on Saturday and thought it was fantastic. Thank you to everyone involved - I can imagine it takes a lot of hard work to organise such an event. Your efforts really are appreciated.
  11. Having now visited the Duke a couple of times I have to agree with the positive reviews of this place. The place looks and feels so much better than previous incarnations and the food really is superb (and very reasonably priced). I really hope it takes off as with this place, the Rye and The Nuns Head this little corner of Peckham/Nunhead is really turning into a decent area for a great night out.
  12. Drove past the old Page 2/Village Inn yesterday and saw The Duke is now open for business after a recent renovation. Has anybody visited yet?
  13. It's true - it's opeing in the basement of the cafe next to the Palmerston.
  14. Michael Palaeologus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I only ever go the cemetery in Nunhead. It is the > liveliest place there. What a load of nonsense. The Nuns Head & The Rye are better pubs than anything East Dulwich has to offer.
  15. I know technically not in East Dulwich but The Old Nuns Head in Nunhead has got to be one of the best in the area. Four real ales, excellent value Sunday roast, live jazz and a tv that doesn't dominate the pub when the football's on make a superb all round venue. This is just the sort of pub that would fit in a treat in the place of The Uplands - a complete dive considering it's position. Along with the Rye and the new 'Village Inn' drinking in Nunhead's getting better and better. East Dulwich wise it's got to be the Bishop although i have to admit you can get a few gobby chavs in on occasions.

Keef Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Keef Wrote> > > Some people may not like G&B, or some of the other > businesses around, that doesn't automatically make > them horrid scum who want pound shops and nail > bars (whatever they are), and amusement arcades. Why on earth would anybody 'dislike' Green and Blue that much. It is completely irrelevant as to whether you like or don't like wine or wine bars (i've only visited a couple of times myself and much prefer a pint to a glass of wine), a top notch establishment like Green & Blue surely can't offend anyone. I'm not a lover of afternoon tea or women's clothes but am delighted by the arrival of Le Chandelier and Mrs Robinson's Boutique to the area as they, along with ED Warehouse, ED Deli, The Palmerston, ED, Grace & Favour, The Bishop, William Rose etc etc improve East Dulwich and make it a more pleasant place to live, shop, drink and eat.
  18. 'Inaccurate rhetoric' what does that mean?
  19. It's a real shame Green & Blue are having these problems. Not only is it one of the best places in ED it has to be one of the best wine bars in London and a huge asset to the area. It seeems that some people on here would prefer ED to be full of pound shops, nail bars and amusement arcades. Be honest - pretty much everyone on this forum prefers ED today than what it once was (let's face it - it's massive improvement is the major reason most forumites moved here in the first place)and the very presence of quality independent retailers like Green & Blue helps to accelerate this improvement.
  20. i'm interested in buying a property on waveney avenue in nunhead (just the other side of Peckham Rye Common)and am hoping for a bit of advice on the street/area. i know it's not actually in east dulwich but you all seem so knowlegable about the area (particularly the pubs)i thought you might be able to help.
