Northcross Market to open on Sundays?
James Barber replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Their are no plans to close Northcross Road - hence the small proposed increase in stallholder numbers from 20 to 30. Closing Northcross Road between Fellbrigg and Lordship Lane would causes problems for residents on Nutfield, Archdale and Lacon. Closing it between Lordship Lane and Nutfield would be technically feasible but no plans for this at present which would require a further full consultation - did ask for this to be included in the orignal consultation but I also asked for name and home address to be addedd to the online version of the questionairre without success. -
A public consultation about whether to increase Northcross Market from 20-30 pitches and whether it should also be open on Sundays. 2,000 questionairres were distributed to homes in the area. EDITED 4/1 - latest officer report asks to close Northcross Road between Archdale Road and Lacon Road on market days. EDITED 5/1 - to see the council officer report http://moderngov.southwarksites.com/mgConvert2PDF.aspx?ID=3674&T=10 pages 62-68. If you want to inform the committee then email the chairperson [email protected] and vice chairperson [email protected] To be honest I'm amazed at the results. I never expected Sunday opening to be popular. So if you disagree and didn't respond to the consultation you need to shout NOW and email me ASAP. As things stand the committee would be minded to agree to Sunday opening. The results are: 339 responses - 88/89 paper copies were from SE22 residents, the remainder were online - and after some nagging the IP addresses were apparently checked and are local. No weighting was given to proximity to Northcross Road ie how much pain the respondent would suffer from any opening. 92.9% stated they were residents 78.2% in favour of the extension of 20 pitches to 30 pitches. 64% in favour of adding Sunday to the Monday to Saturday designation. 58.9% didn't want the market to stay the same. A formal report has been written up of the consultation findings and presented to a Licensing Committee 5 January 2011. If agreed by the Licencing committee, the changes would be formally implemented from March 2011. IF you feel Sunday opening is a bad idea EMAIL me. If you think a good idea also please email - a farmers market would perhaps be a good focus.

I believe a lot of cash leaves East Dulwich to be spent in Sainsbury's or Tesco's. That on such shopping trips many items that could have been bought locally aren't. It's still clear around 25% in favour, 50% against and remainder not sure for a Waitrose or M&S TYPE supermarket of roughly the size as the current Coop. Clear that many find the current Coop unreliable. I'll try contacting them. Any improvement would help keep us all shop more locally. How would people feel about a supermarket along the lines of The People's Supermarket where members put in 4 hours work a month cooperatively to receive a 20% discount?

Hi evildrwallace and first mate, Southwark's parking enforcement costs are considerable but generally produces a surplus. Dramatically stepping up parknig warden patrols to the point people would always be caught I think would feel oppressive. Most people obey parking restrictions. If anything I think more freedom for parking wardens should be in place. However, I don't see why the nearly half of homes in Southwark should subsidise parking enformcenemt as you've suggested. Often they are the poorer members of out community. So your suggestion would seem less fair, more oppressive and regressive - council tax is already very unfair form of taxation. Regards james. PS Happy New Year to everyone. -
That seems pretty clear to me. 5 for, 10 against a nd 8 not so sure. Hi Bumpkin, I'm not keen to promote chains - I took a days holiday to attend the public planning inquiry and spoke against Caffe Nero. But most local residents do the bulk of their food shopping outside of Lordship Lane. Once they travel to the Sainsbury's of this world they buy other things they might have bought on Lordship Lane. Hi Comutedshortly, The ED Police station I'm hoping will be replaced by a new Police station with housing above. That's certainly the line I've discussed with the past and current head of Policing in Southwark. Hi Keef, Sorry to disbuse you but I don't feel more comfortable with aspriational people. Its a developers term for supermarkets not aiming for the Iceland segment or Sainsbury's, Tesco's, Coop segment. I can assure you I am working hard on other areas but just wanted to get a quick sounding out following up from the 'what does ED need' thread where repeatedly posters have asked for an M&S/Waitrose segment type store. Hi louisina, VERY keen to ensure Lordship Lane is full of local shops. Concerned by the recent trend of estate agents to merge two shop units into bigger estate agent shops. Increasing shop unit sizes is the road to a chain high street. We now only have 50:50 shops and none shop uses.

Sounds a great idea - might be worthwhile speaking with Shortwave Cinema (10 Bermondsey Square) to see how they make it work for them.

They'll also be collected with the next garden waste collections. -
soft play in Peckham - open today???
James Barber replied to pripolla's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi pripolla, The Peckham Pulse number 020 7708 6200 seems to be working - admitedly an answerphone system. Wen it eventually tried calling a real person I also didn't get anyone after an infernal wait. The answerphone doesn't specfically mention that the soft play is open but it only mentions the centres opening times. I'd chance it personally. I'm sorry its not clear and I will take this up with the head of leisure. Hope you have fun at the softplay. -
edited to make clear that as of 3 Jan roughly 25% for, 50% against. How do people feel about a Waitrose or M&S TYPE food store on Lordship Lane - do we want one or not - Or something along the line of The People's Supermarket - which pulls in products made locally? I feel it would help the area having an anchor type food store BUT can see it making Lordship Lane busier and increasing parking pressures. Too much money leaves the area to be spent in Sainsbury's etc and would it help encourage to shop more locally. I can think of a site but wouldn't want to explore it fully without getting a feel for how East Dulwich via this forum feels about the idea.

Hi Narnia, Parking enforcement is meant as much as a deterent as enforcement. The more efficient the enforcement the better the deterent. BUT its self funding in that it has to raise more money than it costs to run the operation else residents would be funding it through council tax and general taxation and leisure centre fees etc. Getting this balance right is really tricky. BUT hidining is a step to far and if you have any examples of this let me know and I'll complain. -

The planning application for a new building replacing the Dulwich Garden Centre with 21 flats, a retail unti and replacement Grove Vale library has been delayed until the new year. I'm excited by this as prospect of a new Grove Vale library double the current 144m2 floor space to 300m2. -
Parking Fine Outside Sainsbury's Local on Lordship Lane
James Barber replied to RicB's topic in The Lounge
Car ownership in real terms has never been cheaper. So the increase in congestion Simonet refers to is related to that and increasing car ownership. I can sympathasise with being miffed seeing others park outside this Sainsburys without getting a ticket. Ironically if the wardens were much more present someone would have started a thread about zealous ticketing rather than the implied ticketing having been so lax RicB thought they could park there thread this appears to start as. -

Hi Dickensman, IF you think it's the road surface then relatively easy to fix. If you think it's a raised area such as the one on Barry Road where it meets Goodrich Road then you'll need to prove that the vibrations come from the road and have someone suitably qualified such as a structural engineer to formally claim for damages. If the former I can help if the latter then without that professional proof I wont (from experience) be able to successfully help you. -

Hi mikese22, Temperatures predicted to continue to be hovering at nought degrees C or slightly below so nothing is going to go mouldy or smelly. We're just not used to thinking in this way. Rubbish people normally miss around 100 collections per 100,000 - around 0.1%. So I also think they've earnt a bit of slack. -

Hi Cora, If you get told that school swimming at Dulwich Leisure Centre pool during school holidays are NOT for general swimming please take their name. I've been assured the manager is clear what's required and that all staff are clear. Hi ejhturner, If you live in a home that Dulwich Estate have a say over then little they or you can do. I believe solar panels are ok if not seen from public highway - please correct me if that isn't allowed. Dulwich Estate are tasked with keeping the civic amenity of the lands they control AND providing cash for schools they have charitable obligation to support. Tricky. The areas so controlled look nice and are remarkably expensive but moving there comes with restrictions. It must feel like being in a conservation zone with very good enforcement and you pay for this. HOWEVER, the Dulwich Estate is keen to engage with residents - they've held one public meeting. Colleagues and I are very keen to encourage and help more of this happen. Hi RDJ, Understand and the same thought crossed my mind. I can see that with fortnightly green wheelie bin collections that then not collecting from them could potentially undermine the 'pilot' popularity. This will have been a political decision. The backlog in my opinion was such that I'd have kept the recycling teams catching up and the green wheelie bins teams catching up to avoid undermining recycling, Labour councillor Barrie Hargrove chose to prioritise green wheelie bins and drop recycling collections. -
I think Forge Masters need for ?80M could be found from a commercial loan, advance staged payments from customers, selling equity. But governments spending ?80M to fund 180 jobs to make nuclear power station parts from a coalition government where one of the parties doesn't want nuclear power. And I know Chris Huhne has announced more nuclear power stations (tory requirement) and huge increase in insulation along with more wind etc power (Lib Dem requirement). I know the state aid is now rearing its head via new regional development devolved bodies. Saint Vince's halo has slipped with being naive enough for a Torygraph honey trap. What a prat. BUT we should all be more worried by New Corporation wanting to totally control BSkyB along with its newspaper empire. An ex.Aussie now naturalised US citizen deciding how UK elections are fought and won. Then we have the deeply reclusive Barclays brothers and their newspaper empire.

Hi Cora, I've been told all school swimming sessions during school holidays become general swimming sessions. What might have happened is they had to close the pool for a session while routine maintenace earlier this week took place on one of the air handling units. Please do try again and fingers crossed next time you'll have a good family swim. Hi RDJ, My understanding is that by Christmas day ALL green wheelie bin rubbish collections will have caught up - just in time for all that non recycleable Christmas rubbish most of us will generate. That all recycling collections wont have caught up by then. Painful as we've had no recycling collection this week either and our blue bags and boxes are at capacity and overflowing. -

Hi RDJ, I'll have fuller details later today....but on Monday 25% of scheduled collections were made, 70% of collections on Tuesday and a full schedule is expected to be completed today. By Christmas day it is hoped all rubbish collections will be up to date - to aid this and help clear the backlog green waste trucks are being diverted to normal rubbish collection duties. Hi Cora, This seems very odd. I'll find out. -

Hi Peterstorm1985, The orignal driver for council magazines was the Audit Commission wanting proof that councils communicated with residents. That's changed. So councils don't feel the need to tick that box anymore. In fact the new Secretary of State Eric Pickles weirdly stating he wanted to maxmise freedoms for councils while telling them to have maximum of 4 issues a year of any council magazine/leaflet. I agree with the intent but not the method. Councils should decide this for themselves. I'm clear that if the Lib Dems were running Southwark we'd drop the magazine as the original driver has gone. Produing and distributing a letter a la DiD would cost to cover the borough around ?5,000 to design & print and ?5,000 to distribute. Drop in the ocean for the councils comms budget. But would one issue have the desired affect. Probably not. Is Southwark Life beign stopped no. I'm sorry I can't directly change this. -

Hi DiD, Southwark Life is delivered to every home every month so not sure an extra leaflet is required. I'm afraid so many time people have read that might be sued for clearing the pavement outside their homes or their garden path that it will take quite sometime to counter that. Would I welcome an expectation that everyone had to clear the path outside their house - yes I would mostly could it would end the nagging doubts most people seem to have that they mustn't. Hi Ratty, 'slithered into coalition' that made me laugh. Last winter two bouts of snow and more salt was spread then than now. The 80 hand propelled gritter trolleys we boought and had out on side roads and pavements - not in use these two bouts due to lack of salt. The councillor responsible stated last Friday "We urge residetns to look out for themselves". Hi headphonauts, Can you email direct with all your details please and I'll try and help you. -
Southwark Primary School Results 2010 Key Stage 2
James Barber replied to Dodo1's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi EDmummy, The CoE church schools generally accept 50:50 religious entry and community entry. So not as drastic as it first appears. Don't forget that any selectivity will result in keen parents more often having kids attend. Many parents will ensure they appear on church attendance registers etc. Self fulfilling that schools that require this do better on average for test results.
