A little update.

We didn't have to change the pipework but we did add a few larger radiators which wasn't a big issue.

The airflow seems fine judging by the way the heat pump is performing.

This month (November) we are getting about 5 KWhs of heat for every KWh of electricity which makes it cheaper than gas on running costs. We are using Octopus tracker which costs around 20p a KWh which when you divide by 5 creates heat at 4p a KWh.

I used a company called Conga from Ipswich.

I wanted to show that you can put an Air Source Heat Pump into a smallish garden in a Victorian terrace right here in East Dulwich.

We had the heat pump fitted plus the domestic hot water tank in the garden and covered it with a green roof/planter. Hot tank on the left, heat pump on the right in the photo.

It's unusual to put a hot tank in the garden in this country but it saves trying to find a space indoors. It is doubly insulated.

The rules are that the heat pump has to be 1m from the boundary. It is incredibly quiet...quieter than the flue from a gas boiler.

There isn't a lot of space in the garden but I think it works well.

I wonder how many people are working out how to leave the car at home for short journeys (5 miles) due to the cost of petrol as well as environmental considerations.

I have been using the bus and train much more...even for work, when I don't have to take much equipment with me.

Also just bought a new guitar case which is much lighter so I can get to rehearsals without the car. Small decisions made by a lot of people add up to a big change.

I spoke to a Labour activist before the election result who was worried about doorstep pushback on the ULEZ and LTNs on labour voting.

Looks like the LTN/ULEZ rebellion didn't happen?

Also something is encouraging a huge increase in cycling. My guess is its part LTN and part the zeitgeist.

How do people feel about the increase of 60% in bike use?

Plus the rise and rise of the e-bike. All kinds of people seem to like them. Just sayin.

I notice that there are a variety of base line dates used for comparison, one in January, one in February and all the rest in the months April to October. I have no way of knowing how to invalidate which baseline data and on what grounds.

I would prefer that someone skilled in data and statistics could advise on the available data and while showing their method and reason make a judgement which I can assess for myself.

How many data points from the baseline should we treat as valid? And on what grounds?

Traffic data collected in June 2021 using Automatic Traffic Counts (ATCs) and compared with baseline data shows:

 Traffic is down 10% (on average -16,201 per day) in the Dulwich area overall

 Cycling is up 66% (on average an additional +4062 journeys per day) in the Dulwich area overall

Specifically, in June 2021, cycling journeys had doubled or more on average, per day, on the following streets6:

 Calton Avenue (+266%, +688)

 Burbage Road N (+85%, +400 )

 Eynella Road (+124%, +327)

 Turney Road E (+102%, +310)

 Dulwich Village (+266%, +688)

Vivacity Sensors were located at key junctions in Dulwich Village, East Dulwich and Champion Hill to record cycling and pedestrian activity.

The cycling data gathered in June 2021 , and compared with baseline data

at the following locations shows:

 Calton Avenue at the junction with Dulwich Village and Court Lane there was a 119% increase in cycling

 Townley Road there was a 50% increase in cycling

 Champion Hill there was a 247% increase in cycling

 Burbage Road there was a 77% increase in cycling

 Melbourne Grove there was a 79% increase in cycling

I think that it is much more likely that people vote against road closures because it restricts their ability to drive where they want and when they want.

I don't mean that as a criticism of those who post on here. It's just that people...in the main... love their cars and want to protect that freedom and are less bothered about the rest.

It may be that Dulwich in the majority has had an outpouring of community minded thinking but it's more likely that they want to use a brilliantly useful, cozy, convenient method of transport over walking, cycling or getting the bus.

Or I might be wrong!

I really want less traffic and less pollution.

Do the road closures increase bike use?

Is this thread dedicated to evidence based approaches?

Maybe people believe different things?

Why would people want to prove something doesn't work when they know it doesn't?

I think of all the studies published about road closures there is no evidence that they don't reduce car use. These studies were shared early on in this thread. I could post them up again? They might not be fair though!

If cars are reduced in activity in a certain area wont they always be diverted?

How do you ban cars?
