  1. It was nuts last night. No loo roll, rice, tinned pulses, dried pasta, ibuprofen, paracetamol, chicken, sanitary products, antibac wipes.....

And no large trolleys, probably to prevent people from stock piling but annoying when just back from holiday and needed to do a big shop.

By comparison, the Little Waitrose in Vauxhall, fully stocked!

  2. For an easy and tasty substitute, I use lentils, usually tinned green sometimes mixed with the more expensive black beluga ones instead of mince in cottage pie and bolognese. Just add them in after you've cooked up the usual mix of onion/garlic/celery (personally I don't add carrots as they are pure evil)
  3. We took my 12 year old nephew on the Thames Rib Experience last summer. He absolutely loved it (he's a premature moody teen ;

For an evening out how about Backyard Cinema at MERCATO METROPOLITANO, you can mooch about beforehand in the market, loads of amazing food. Easy to get to too (40 or 176 bus)

Brilliant, thanks! will give it a go tonight.

  5. I'm on Rodwell and it's lovely. As a street it's super quiet as it's not a cut through and doesn't even get too busy with parents parking up for drop off/pick up at Heber. Parking is fine, can get busy in the evenings but I can always get a space a few yards from the house if not bang outside. My Mum always marvels at how peaceful it is whenever she come to stay. I've got great neighbours and everyone is friendly.

Good location for primary schools, surgery on Crystal Palace road only a few minutes walk. You can be on Lordship Lane in minutes so great for Cinema, shopping, eating out etc.

Houses vary in size from one side of the road to the other. Ours is probably one of the smaller being a standard 2 story terrace but the loft was converted and kitchen extended into the side return before we moved in so it's a good size 4 bed. Garden is a small patio but I don't think that's uncommon in our area of ED.

We looked at A LOT of houses before we settled on Rodwell, to be honest we didn't have limitless choice as we bought when people were going a bit mental and places were going to sealed bids and in an ideal world we'd like a slightly bigger hall and an extra half foot or so width in the reception room but that's being super picky. It's a great house, a pretty road with beautiful blossom in the spring and a brilliant location.

  6. Ooo where to start!

Freezer staples of Birds Eye Chicken Pies, Chicken and Ham Findus Crispy Pancakes which I have searched in vain for nowhere to be found, not even Iceland :(

Stuffing the car for holidays in France: Tinned Chicken in White Sauce and tinned Chicken Curry (M&S natch) Tinned Potatoes, Tinned Petit Pois and Carrots, Beef and Crab Shippam?s Paste, Frey Bentos Pies, Vesta Curries and the Chow Mien with the magic crispy noodles, Heinz Cream of Celery Soup (double gagg) Baked Beans and Pork Sausages Weirdly we ate really well in France so I?ve no idea why my parents insisted on bringing a load of tinned food that inevitably didn?t get eaten.

Puddings: Chocolate and Butterscotch Angel Delight, Pearce Duff?s Blancmange (usually the Vanilla one GAGG), Ice Magic, Arctic Roll, Vienetta.

Me and the other half still keep a stash of Angel Delight in the cupboard for a treat.....sometimes topped with squirty cream. mmmmmmmmmmmm.

  7. Totally agree redjam, it's so depressing. I walk past it twice a day and it infuriates me. What a wasted opportunity to create an innovative and thoughtful piece of architecture. Maybe it was the planners but why oh why build a mock Victorian house and then do it with so little integrity.

The interior is incredibly ugly too. If you're going to pretend it's a period property at least put down a decent hardwood floor (their flooring makes me want to weep)

  8. I'd say that 2k sounds about right although you could probably negotiate it down a bit. It's usually around ?150 per day not including VAT for one person on the job but can be more like ?200. The painting and prep of walls/ceiling is the most straightforward but doors, banisters, skirtings etc can hike up the price due to the prep work involved. They'll need to be sanded and primed prior to paining and this is the time consuming bit. As a guide we had the inside of 2 bedroom sash windows and that took the decorator the best part of two days in prep. To be fair they were knackered but it's not a cheap job.

If I were you I'd ask for a breakdown of the job, hall/staircase/doors. I would imagine that it's the staircase and doors which will take up a fair percentage of the cost.

  9. I?m going to regret this but here goes?..Favourite filling is cheese. Cheese from a shop that I have queued to get into having worked a 5 day week with a commute and the only time I can buy said cheese for said Tart/Flan/Quiche is on a Saturday when unsurprisingly other people like me queue too! Pastry made with some lovely french butter because it?s delicious. Oh and maybe a bit of meat (I am quite partial to a Quiche Lorraine) which I also queue for on a Saturday because I have no other option. But wait, I could by these ingredients for a quarter nay half the price in a supermarket and not queue at all (well maybe just a little bit, but it?s an entirely different sort of queue). But I don?t bloody want to. I want to buy decent ingredients, support local businesses and I can afford it and I?m not ashamed of that.

And sometimes on a hot evening I will shamelessly sit outside a pub or restaurant because it?s pleasant and might be a bit cooler (just to be clear, that?s temperature not a reflection of my wanton vanity). In the colder months I may even sit in the window looking out to the street and watch the world go by.

Ah the forum the gift that keeps on giving.

Sorry, rant over. Tried to keep it on topic though Admin ;)

  10. Thanks for the heads up, no, we don't have a motorbike or push bike for that matter. Odd, and there's nothing of worth in the front other than some quite nice window boxes full of very unhappy sun scorched plants. Due to the recent thefts of garden paraphernalia I'm going to put them round the back for now. Don't want to encourage the bastards.
