  1. Massive eviction taking place about 11AM as I rode past, from the empty land opposite Harris Academy on Bellenden Road. Maybe they'd done something wrong, or hadn't moved when first told, but it looked like massive overkill to the naked eye: four police riot vans, three squad cars, thirty odd officers and the same number of private security men, some of them with attack dogs (one of the buggers (dog) tried to leap at me as I rode past, which didn't say much for the level of control their handlers have).

  3. Pierre, it may have been a bizarre way of putting it - though it seems clear enough to me - but in the cold light of day I hope you'll look again and see I was saying pretty much the same as you!
  4. Imagine your neighbour doesn't like you, you see a gang of people with baseball bats vandalising his car - are you going to go out and risk your safety just to make sure nobody blames you? Amazing, we've gone from travellers being blamed for being criminals to now being blamed for not being policemen!
  5. Not sure you'll ever get taxi drivers happy with any cycle provision, however well designed - I was having a conversation with one when riding in his cab along the Embankment recently, he said how much he hated the new lane as it caused so much congestion. When I pointed out that we were whistling along in the middle of the day he conceded the point, but said cyclists still shouldn't have the lane. When I asked why not he replied, "'Cos I can't stand the ponces." A good slow ride is always a nice change - when I go out with Mrs.H on weekends I notice loads of architectural and other details that I miss when out alone and riding fast.

Fairly sure certain people on here would have the same views on Syrian refugees moving into the neighbourhood, though they wouldn't express them publicly as like all bullies they only like to hit easy targets.

If it's not too late do as Fox said - stick it on Gumtree and if it's at all usable someone'll collect it for free within 24 hours.
  10. Never noticed it before in twenty years! Intriguing...it could be to do with the trams but I think the central reservations were only put in after the trams stopped running, so it would be odd to leave it there.
  11. robbin Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think my point has just been supported! Yep, that's what people who haven't got a decent point just love to say as if it makes theirs valid. Sorry, doesn't work on anyone more than about seven years old. Still, you keep on commenting hiding behind "the anonymity of the keyboard" which you so castigated!

I believe I said this about one of your posts a few days ago Sue, but yet again you've smacked the nail squarely on the head!

Spot on thank you Blah, to prove the old saw wrong that "a liberal is a conservative who hasn't been mugged" I've been mugged at knifepoint twice in my life, once by a couple of black teenagers when I lived in Brixton, once by a couple of white teenagers when I lived in Bath. On neither occasion, although I was upset and, frankly, scared, did I say "Oh that's what they're like" - I just knew I'd fallen prey to a criminal minority of the prevailing majority ethnic group in that area.

Personally I'm sick of the stupid phrase "snowflake generation" aimed at anyone who is in the slightest bit liberal in politics or attitude. And it's ironic that you, "Robbin," should say "The anonymity of the keyboard sometimes seems to have the effect of encouraging the sanctimonious" - I'm using my full name on here, why don't you?
  17. Is your bathroom configured so that separating the bath and lavatory into two separate rooms (or restoring it to that configuration) would be possible? Wouldn't solve all problems with kids but might help a bit.

'I am offended by that.' > Well, so f**king what." --Stephen Fry So if someone says "Jews are only interested in money and secretly run the world" or "Blacks will never be as clever as whites because it's genetic" saying "I'm offended by that" is "just whining." The first thing bigots need is for it to be made clear that others do not find their opinions acceptable. I like Stephen Fry but he doesn't half talk some shite sometimes, as do those who quote him (quite possibly out of context, I suspect he was talking about people who are offended by bad language or portrayals of homosexuality on TV than either of the examples I've used).
  19. I'm so quick to shout at drivers who ignore, at best, and bully, at worst, cyclists, that I wanted to share this event today. On my third ascent of Crystal Palace hill around lunchtime (very smug, first time managed three goes since (partially) recovering from a life-threatening illness years ago), as I approached the top I started to weave a little (as the road was completely empty) to keep momentum: hearing a car coming up behind I naturally moved back in to the kerb, only to hear a shout from the car: "Keep going mate, there's nobody behind and I'm not in a hurry!" When I got to the top this young chap in a green Fiesta gave me a thumbs up and a friendly toot on the horn as he overtook. If you happen to read this, feller, I tip my hat to a sportsman and a gentleman!

Why cant LL have the same upgrade. Because you accused him of being more interested in looking after Court Lane than Lordship: > I always think that if JB actually lived near LL > things might be different - he's happier looking > after Court Lane than Lordship Lane so I was pointing out that in my experience, where he's gone out of his way to try to sort an issue not even in his ward, he is not as self-interested or parochial as you seem to imply.

Not sure where you get that idea - bonfires are perfectly legal as indeed is burning wood in outdoor appliances like pizza ovens or chimineas. Smoke control regulations do not apply to wood burned outside, the smoke has to emerge from a building chimmney to come under their auspices. The council can step in and issue an abatement order - for example if someone's having bonfires every day - and you can be fined if, for example, the smoke from your bonfire causes a hazard to traffic, but they're certainly not illegal per se.
  23. This T shirt with both Capri and Union Flag, with Tower Bridge thrown in for good measure, might fit the bill? https://www.homeofretro.com/product/official-ford-capri-1970s-mens-navy-t-shirt/?gclid=CPDV4dTkzc8CFcsp0wodIrYJyA
  24. Lived in a large block until last year, it was understood that one left one's bag/basket atop the machine, if someone else needed the machine before the user returned they just put the finished load in the bag. Seemed to work fine, I assumed that was what everyone did.

Well, it was an announcement made by the Home Secretary in a major national televised speech and I haven't seen anywhere that it's been buried as yet.
