That's awful, I'm sorry to hear that. -
Phone thefts in East Dulwich

I dunno, I was a kid! I didn't really pay much attention to the South London Press. I bet if one trawled through the archives there would be plenty of crime reports. But in any case, the actual prevalence of crime, the (media) reporting of crime, and the popular perception of crime are three different things with only a weak connection to each other. It is romanticising the past to suggest that the worst thing that ever happened was the kids got a fat lip. When was this idyllic decade? Not the 70s...or the 80s...or the 90s... In the 80s and early 90s around here it was practically a monthly ritual to be burgled or have your car (if you were lucky enough to have one) broken into. Things certainly are bad at the moment - is anyone else noticing a lot of smashed car windows? - but they've been bad before too: 1977, 1985... -

It is good, but it's a bit delicate. It's a proper meal with careful ingredients cooked well. It's not cheap and cheerful post-pub nosh. -

When I was a kid (which was not recently) I was robbed at knifepoint in Dulwich Park and stories of the Chelsea Smilers terrified every playground. Things are worse now but let's not romanticise the past either. -

Even the quality of the trolls has gone right down in recent years! In the old days, with a light touch and good timing, you could have got a good 5-6 pages out of that, maybe even a couple of forum flounces. This trolling here, though...sigh...it's just too heavy-handed and obvious. You didn't even connect it to some kind of culture war, like ULEZ or Brexit or vegans or working from home. Pitiful. -

Murder in peckham rye park
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to tedfudge's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As a follow up to this: "Four men have been jailed for a knife attack in Dulwich which left the [18 yo] victim with over 60 stab wounds...South Londoners Tashan Bailey-Brown, 23, Denzel Ealmeida, 22, Darren Soyemi, 25, and Kevaniel Perkins-Robinson, 21, were jailed for a total of 117 years for attempted murder." Sounds like amazing work by London Ambulance Service to keep this kid alive, and police and prosectors for a quick arrest and successful prosecution. Also worth acknowledging journalist Herbie Russell pf the Southwark News for covering the beginning and end of the story. But overall there is nothing to celebrate here. https://southwarknews.co.uk/area/dulwich/four-jailed-for-117-years-for-kingswood-estate-stabbing/ -
Best place for a Chinese?
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to Katherty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think Magic Wok on Lordship Lane near The Plough does its own deliveries. It's a classic takeaway place. Three Uncles in Brixton Market is pretty good (and only a short trip away on the 37). -
It's a nice building. I seem to remember there was a "pivot" to offering hotdesking services upstairs at one point. I think that was a hard market for many people to break into - and then COVID didn't help...
-
This "team" with unspecified source of funding and unclear links to other similarly-named groups is not One Dulwich. I think in all the media reports, I've only noticed one person mentioned by name as an actual member - the "co-founder" who's an ex-PR guy. Is it just One Guy in Dulwich?

Inconsiderate parking outside local schools
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to malumbu's topic in Roads & Transport
Yeah, the misogyny is off the mark. Possibly if more men cared for kids and took the lead on their children's education you'd see more inconsiderate school run dads. -
It's weird and irrational to continue to insist that Southwark is lying even when it has been explained to you why the number is stated that way. You can't even identify a motive for why Southwark would want to lie. Why not just say you got the wrong end of the stick when you read the document?
-
That seems a very reasonable amd plausible explanation. This thread is a great example of #southwarkderangementsyndrome in action. Someone doesn't understand a number on a council document? Clearly it's a LIE and part of a terrible conspiracy (even though that person can't identify a reason why that would make sense).

Why imagine when you could just look up the facts? This was the first hit when I Googled "GLA 8.6%". Khan is spending it on the police, the fire brigade and TfL - the greedy bastard... https://www.london.gov.uk/www.london.gov.uk/media-centre/mayors-press-release/Mayor_proposes_council_tax_increase_due_to_lack_of_Government_funding_for_the_police_fire_and_transport_services

Your story is demonstrating exactly what ULEZ was supposed to do: reduce or eliminate usage of older, dirtier cars in London. Well done on making the shift!

It's odd to spend time wondering about implausible ways in which the Council might persecute you. 🤔 Have you spoken to your family about your worries? #southwarkderangementsyndrome -
Southwark Council crowdfunding for green projects

Luckily you don't need to draw inferences from your observations about new flats on Shad Thames in the last 40 years. Just read the Council's budget documents. They're published in extreme detail and linked above. -

Southwark is like the UK in miniature: there are Dulwich Village mansions with 5 cars parked in front, but there are also people living in abject poverty across much of the borough. People generally should be careful not to extrapolate their own experience too widely. The idea that Southwark is bathing in an ocean of Council Tax from new builds is just wrong. It's taken years to redevelop the Heygate Estate - and those were the years of austerity. Southwark's finances are all freely available - check them out for yourself, and see how much money has been cut. https://www.southwark.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/fairer-future/fairer-greener-safer-southwark-s-council-delivery-plan?chapter=2 -

The Peckham Coal Line proposals (which frankly I had forgotten the details of, and never knew the council had made any contribution toward) were an interesting idea worth exploring at the time. A £10k contribution to a feasibility study that was mostly paid by private donations is pretty good value. Obviously those struck by #southwarkderangementsyndrome will say this thing the council did 8 years ago is literally the end of Western civilisation. https://www.peckhamcoalline.org/blog/feasibility-study-1-year-on
