  1. Good advice from everyone. Take photos of what has been done so far and maybe also check whether your house/flat insurance includes legal advice though obviously much better if you can follow up the suggestion of newresidentin dulwich and talk to someone with specific experience of building disputes.
  2. I don't understand why the police or emergency services spend time and effort to unglue protesters when they, or the public, are NOT in danger (ie not in the middle of a road etc). If protesters glue themselves elsewhere (for example railings or a reception desk in an office building) let them unglue themselves. There must be more important things to do than unglue people who've chosen to glue themselves.
  3. I've spent years answering the question "Has the property ever suffered from subsidence" (Yes, 30 years ago) and have stayed with one insurer for a very long time for the reasons you state. However I've recently changed to John Lewis (as recommended in Which magazine) who act as representatives of Munich Re and saved a considerable amount of money on combined cover and they also accepted the past subsidence.

I would expect your excess to increase with any insurer. Also. in the past, I've had to produce detailed technical statements and survey reports of the subsidence remedial works etc so I would suggest you keep as much documentation as you can get about the surveys and works you had done.

Also I've found you generally get a better rate on combined buildings/contents cover rather that insuring separately.

  4. I've insulated under my ground floor by cutting a small square hatch in the floorboards and then sliding about on my back pushing insulation up between the joists and holding it in place with wire netting stapled to the underside of the joists. Be sure to electrically bond the wire netting to any adjacent metal pipes, earths etc. This was years ago and it's made a substantial difference.
  5. Which.co.uk published a report into Breakdown services based on customer research Sept 2021. Green Glag came 8th out of 12 but they gave it 4 stars for Value for Money.

Overall top scorer was Axa followed by Start Rescue and then the AA. But these rankings would change according to what's important to you. IE Cost, response times, percentage repaired at the roadside, customer service, additional features like recovery to home, hotel cost, cover for specific car or for a person in any car, hire car for onward travel etc etc.

  6. The town of Oban, on the west coast of Scotland, has announced it is re-instating it's firework display this year, 10 years after the last one suffered a firing mistake and the whole ?6000 of fireworks went off in 60 secs. Fortunately there was a reporter from the Oban Times on hand to record it.

Many said it was the best display the town had ever put on!

  8. What a pleasure to find Rye Lane open to buses this morning and easy access reinstated to the station and shops etc. It's unfortunate that Southwark Council have replaced one Experimental Traffic Order with another Experimental Traffic Order but I'm sure they will pay close attention to the next consultation exercise in order to avoid an endless parade of Experimental Traffic Orders and temporary trials.
  9. I have had two Airforce portable aircon units (model WAP358DB) for several years using them occasionally every summer. They have been very efficient and reliable but are quite large, (470W x 300D x 900H) suitable for a bigger room but I expect there are smaller sized models.

Like all aircon units (unlike cooler units) they require an external vent to exhaust the hot air. This is a flexible pipe normally 100-110mm diam, the ones I have end in a rectangular fitting. I found the easiest way to arrange this is either:

    - If you have a redundant fireplace/chimney breast cut a hole to insert the exhaust hose.

    - If you have a sash window raise the lower leaf, insert a piece of wood across the window frame and lower the leaf down to hold it firm. Cut a hole in the wood to receive the end of the exhaust hose.

If you want to avoid having to empty the internal water tank then drill a hole through your outside wall for the drain hose. You can plug this with a cork when no longer needed or use a pipe with, for example a drain cock, for a more permenant soltion. (If you are not on the ground floor then fix the drain cock inside the room not on the

exterior wall where it won't be reachable).

  10. It was a very impressive and moving ceremony.

Incdentally 'murder' is the unlawful killing of a human being, not birds and animals. Best to get the terminolgy right when dealing with serious matters.
