  1. Not wanting to make this a competition, but when I lived on Dunstans Road I had the fuel cap on my Jaguar forced off three or four times. Each time it cost me ?20 in parts to fix. The killer bit was it had an 83 litre tank...

Sad to say that it was actually a factor in us moving house.

I was involved in an accident at that junction. We were hit by a car coming out of Underhill Road at about 30 mph. We very nearly killed the pedestrian who ended up underneath our car and all three of us in the two cars were badly injured. The repair work to the brick wall - that was done because of damage done by the force of our car being carried sideways by his. So yes, there is a problem with cars on Underhill Road not stopping.

The sooner something proper is put in place there, the sooner I can drive through it without a shiver going down my spine as I approach with caution...

  3. The staircase in mine has been moved, with changes to the doors leading to what was the parlour and kitchen. Our back door is where the alcove / sink were, with the old one turned into a wide modern window under which lives the sink.

There are no fireplaces in the whole house although capped off chimneys remain on the roof. I do hope something strong is holding them up there!

Also our front bedroom and middle bedroom doors are next to each other with a bathroom created at the top of the stairs, leaving us with three bedrooms.

Quite a shame really as I feel some of the character is missing. Not quite as much of a shame as top and bottom flats though. They get very creative with space when they convert them!!

  4. It struck me last night that my house must be a very different place to when it was first built ~1900. What I'm wondering is - how different?

Does anybody know if the Victorian / early Edwardian houses that we are so blessed with in South East London are laid out like the one here-

    Victorian Floor Plan

I'd love to know if that is a standard layout or if they varied significantly.

And does anybody live in one with an reasonably unchanged layout? I'm guessing everybody now has a bathroom and inside toilet :))

Mine has certainly been changed, but we do still have the coal chute and cover by the front door which reminds me how lucky we are with central heating every time I look at it!

Would love to hear what you think!

  5. That is very interesting indeed. Was it an XJ6 (X300 for those in the know) by any chance? Up until three weeks ago I lived on Dunstans Road (top half) and my Jaguar was hit on several occasions. A design flaw in the flap makes it very easy to force open. I am wondering if me moving has made them travel down to Goodrich to perform their crimes on a car they know they can hit without too much effort.

I feel for the owner because not only do they make off with potentially over ?100 of petrol but they steal the cap and break the striker too. Not to mention paintwork damage.

    Sods.

  6. Even if there were any I doubt they would be sinusoidal any more. Most of the speed bumps and humps fall apart at their leading edges. If they were build properly then even what we now consider harsh jolts would be much, much better.

It really annoys me that we pay for 'improvements' that are lashed in half-arsed and fall apart.

  7. Regarding fingerprintng and forensics-

After my car was victim to petrol theft again last night the police told me I could take it for a forensics test. Reasonable suggestion I thought. However, and I quote the policeman I spoke to, "It's not very good really. You have to go to him, he can't come to you. And it's only open Monday to Friday 8am to 10am".

What use is that at 11am on a Friday? Any evidence will have long gone by then, especially when the car has no petrol left and you have to fill it up just to get there, which would potentially wipe away prints etc. I find that really quite shoddy and pathetic.

Admittedly these are relatively small crimes and nobody is getting hurt, but I've felt like crap and mildly violated all day because of it.

    Humph.

Edited to change times to both being "am"!!
