In case anyone else is in this position, the answer is the Southwark recycling centre DOES take mattresses. When I went there today there were several in the household section, and a man working there told me that in fact there are only four things they don't take: asbestos, petrol, food and can't remember the other one. Despite what the website says you can take furniture. Saves the cost of a collection.

Lameduck, I sympathise. We've just got to keep going, keep ourselves busy and not look too far ahead. It's a good opportunity to try a new hobby, especially something creative or involving learning so we'll have something to show for it at the end.

I get what other people are saying, but maybe if you're in a vulnerable group it makes you more anxious and therefore more sensitive to what you see going on around you. The 2m rule was based on people standing and walking normally, and a runner breathing hard through their mouth with no mask leaves a much broader 'wake', much like the difference between a car going at 20mph and one at 40mph. I'm often passed very close from behind, and I've seen them scattering droplets of sweat, coughing, or spitting. If you're at risk, that's quite frightening. I've spent 9 months walking in the road to get out of the way of fit, healthy people who won't make space for others.

Sneezing may not be listed as one of the top three symptoms, but if people have it (which they might not be aware of) and sneeze or cough in the normal way without covering their mouth they could project germs over a longer distance.

You could call Ray Coman at Coman & Co, a local accountant who does a lot of work with self-employed people (including me). I'm sure he'd tell you if it's worth doing or not. He often has guides on his website as well.

Don't worry - I had a couple of previous incarnations myself but gave up a while back (as with gamblong, when the fun stops, stop...) Just returned to re-home some things before a move!

You're right - problem, and reason for posting, is Southwark recycling centre doesn't take them and their bulk collections service is either booked up or auspended.

Some people are just pointing their phone at the QR code and pausing for a moment, but don't actually have the app. Was amazed when I saw someone I know do that.

I feel I should clarify that I was looking for legit solutions. Obviously no one present would fly tip or do anything environmentally unfriendly.

I don't think people accept them for dog beds, and even furniture companies who take the old one away when they deliver the new one now can't. Maybe I'll just roll it up, take it with me and wait for the next lull between lockdowns.

Has anyone used ADN Cleaning? They're a local company and seem to have a lot of positive reviews online.

It's a foam one so no hard bits to get through, though it does make me feel like I'm turning into Denis Nielsen.

I did have a look as there are apps that do that kind of thing. Prices are surprisingly high and some look dodgy.

Could always chop it up and put it in the green bin I suppose but seems like rubbish laundering.

I wondered if anyone has suggestions? It's a foam one, double, not damaged but over 20 years old so not suitable for re-use. The recycling centre doesn't accept them and Southwark's bulk collections are already booked up till nearly Xmas. There doesn't seem to be a tip, though I guess I could drive it to Wandsworth's and pay.

I'm moving out of London. I found the challenge is that almost everywhere that's commutable isn't that much less expensive, particularly once you add on the cost of commuting. I'm going a non-commutable distance on the basis of affordability / nicer property / remote working with 1-2 days a week in London. If you need to commute regularly it would be worth looking at parts of Essex just outside the M25, like Epping or Roydon. Manningtree is another option, on the coast and end of Dedham Vale yet only an hour to Liverpool St.

Also look at Ward Thomas as they have a partner that does national removals based on shipping containers that are delivered a few days later. Similar price to above.

If cost is the main factor you could try NDR Removals or Mister Bee, both of which would be about ?450 for a 3.5t mwb Luton + 2 men. I'm moving soon and used a number of comparison sites, which is a good source if cost is the main factor for you, though in the end I went with a better-known name.

I passed Peckham car boot sale today. Carnage.

You can get a box of 50 disposable on Amazon for about ?8. Plenty of non disposable ones too.

Or make your own, like all those newspaper articles at the start of lockdown. I used large cotton hankies, which I had already, with a folded piece of kitchen roll inside, which makes 4 layers, and you can iron with a hot iron to kill germs.

Can anyone recommend a good end-of-tenancy cleaning company, including steam cleaning carpets?

I'm looking for customer recommendations.
