  1. Agreed this isn’t anti car apart from those who need to make it that. So my idea is that that there are parts of the sidewalk that are uncomfortably and often precariously narrow for those with prams, wheelchairs or unsteady on their feet. So, for the area between The Lordship Pub and the Roundabout, reduce to 3 traffic lanes (2 for driving, 1 bus stop/parking) with the bus/parking to alternate sides so works for both and south bound traffic. The space would have to come from somewhere and that would be current on street parkjng. The footpath that would make the area more accessible for everyone (not just the 78% / 95% who didn’t drive); so nicer for all (local or travelled) who visit; and would encourage more shopping as would improve the ability for locals to do essential shopping more easily, and provide fewer pinch-points so space to take it slow for those who are wobbly, or are visiting for the vibe and non-essential shopping. So, Would a nicer place make more people want to visit (and a small percentage use a car needing to park)? Yes. To make that viable would need more parking bays to be timed, while some people live and work on LL, it isn’t suitable for long period parking given the volume of commercial units and resulting foot/vehicle traffic. While the novelty of a car free day for shopping is high (even regular ones like north cross markets), i think more interesting is how to solve ongoing day-to-day issues.
  2. I am generally for making roads around schools safer, but this one doesn’t seem to do that. Given the lack of ways through the area due to the rail tracks and one way Choumert, all this is going to do is push traffic down Sandison/Reedham/McDermott St - all narrow already and without crossings/stops. And cycling that way on my commute have already seen (and experienced) near misses. Making the area outside a school safer while making other surrounding streets more dangerous doesn’t make it safer for residents and children, and can make commutes Less safe overall.
  3. No council links for me (maybe the word proposal in the title feels formal?) - just notice how tight it can be going along the paths (near fit for, and Oru on west side; and also in front of CheeseBlock/SMB on East side, and how many cars seem to be regulars/not move. Though I probably notice it more than others due to often walking with dog on a lead. Some interesting points. I moved to the area after covid so wasn’t around for the changes then that people mentioned. I would be shocked if much of the passing trade on LL comes from cars/parking - given how hard it looks to find parking now (and the struggles of those who try to reverse in with a bus up their tail), which makes me think it wouldn’t actually make a huge difference to visitors, but would improve the space no end. Though I suspect would be a long way and many surveys off. 🙂
  4. Now that Lordship Lane has been resurfaced, it seems the right time to rip it up with an idea for making it a nicer place to visit. Or at least hear some opinions. What is the parking on Lordship lane was reduced to be on a single side, and footpaths made wider. Given how tight some of the footpaths are, and how busy it gets (which is wonderful for the local shops, employment and just adding to the vibe) - how about Lordship go to single side parking. The footpath on the Western side of the road would benefit from a bit more width. What else would need to change - I suspect ensuring that the remaining parking is limited to 2hour slots (no return) so that people who do need to drive get parking, rather than the shop's vans being on a major shopping thoroughfare all day. I'm sure there are other great reasons for it (and possible one or two against it). What else would elevate Lordship Lane to a Baron's Boulevard?
  5. My initial thought was whether they would keep the East Dulwich Road site given how close they are - but then they've only just re-done it so I assume will be planning to run both.
  6. Good on you for doing something rather than some who would prefer to complain about what others are doing. Enjoyed the read and look forward to seeing more of the meals from the area. There's are some great substack newsletters out there for local news and exploration. Love to see it.
  7. Had a great roast there last week. We got a walk-in but were very early (1230) otherwise needed bookings. Most dishes were outstanding, would have loved the chicken to have more seasoning. Overall, seems great.
  8. We use Virtuo when we go away for a few days, really nice cars (Merc GLA; BMW 1) that are new and clean. They can drop off the car to your house (or street) and pick it up at the end - again, not for a single day, but we tend to go for 3/4 days. Not the cheapest but competitive and for the great cars - we like it. There is also pick-up from ncp near Guy's Hospital. Here's a £30 off referral https://tinyurl.com/virtuoED if you're interested (yes I get that too). I recently used Zip car for a daily rental- was more expensive than virtuo rate (though local ED pickup was a plus) - but a 70k mile clapped out MG was a pretty terrible experience - squealy breaks, no suspension, the leather'ish drivers seat threadbare on right side. Surprised any car rental company could keep vehicles on the road that long.
  9. Re dogs: Goose Green is fully fenced - plenty of dogs. While Peckham Rye isn't fully fenced, it is very large - so if your dogs like to run, but will come back when called they can get a lot of runaround there (again plenty of dogs), and as a Melbournite - you can barrack for the SE London Giants aussie rules team there too. As an aussie now in ED a few years, love the area.
  10. Community fibre weren’t available when we moved but as soon as BT contract is up will be moving to them. Heard only good things.
  11. The Completist in Copeland Park has a diligent black and white worker.
  12. Been using butter and crust for about 6 months. Really good milk. Great bread and easy way to schedule Monmouth coffee beans. Has been great. Would recommend.
