The electorate obviously thought one of the two was worthy of their vote, and if personality is all they need to be deemed worthy of office then we're all fucked

Like that's unusual.

I've seen Owen Jones do other stuff and he really does have some quite reasonable arguments. But whenever he writes for the G, he conjures up complete horsecrap. And he's not the only one - David Mitchell has started writing some really terrible columns there as well.

I'd suspect it was the sub-editors at work, but we know the Grauniad has never employed any.

Not sure Mr Khan has the experience, the personality or the savvy to do a good job. Ken and Boris were personalities with lots and lots of on-the-job background. Khan strikes me as dull, a plodder, uninspired and uninspiring. And, to tell the truth, the mayor's job is really just a glorified transport commissioner so all the histrionics about the mayoralty in general and the rather patronising "working class immigrant's son - who is also a Muslim - becomes mayor" is so much froth. Add to that the fact he has to deal with a Conservative government which will be looking to trip him up at any possibility, I don't see his four years really amounting to much.

    • Really interesting discussion here. It's difficult to respect the views of people who support Farage, Trump, Musk etc. Why should we, when their views are deplorable. But then that exact 'deplorable' label, as we know, is counterproductive and drives people to double down / switch off to more progressive views. How do you actually help change minds? We're currently spiralling into dark places culturally and politically imo. The amount of open racism, even amongst front line politicians here and in the US is astounding to me. Feels like we're going backwards. The influence of social media and the tech billionaires / bros, is a powerful and largely malignant one. There was an enlightening (and frightening) bit of journalism by Sky this week about Musk's influence on British politics. He has a strange obsession with the UK and London in particular (as do many on the US right wing): https://news.sky.com/story/the-x-effect-how-elon-musk-is-boosting-the-british-right-13464487

    • I'm going to Paris with friends, staying in the 3rd arrondissement. I used to go a lot but that was ages ago so wondered if anyone has any 'insider tips'? We are interested in small art galleries, independent shops, good value cafes and restaurants that may not feature in all the many online articles or guides, thanks!
    • Hi, My two years old nephew is a complete bookworm and we are looking for more books for him. Is anyone selling or giving away any books please?    Thank you.
