sharpening the knives

Thought that would get your attention.

There is a knif sharpener Sharpsmith in SE22 - anyone used them? Get fed up of Garden Centres shrugging their shoulders, in particuarky one of the big ones in SE23 just telling me to buy new garden tools. I'be got some proper British Sheffield made shears.

not sure whether they're made to tolerate sharpening any more - i got a pair of Wilkinson's shears sharpened at one of the local garden centres (one of those now gone to make way for developers!) and they just snapped soon after. if you're suggesting that "proper British Sheffield made shears" are exempt from planned obsolescence, i very much doubt it!

The tiny garden centre in a place I can't presently remember - towards West Dulwich? - will take stuff to be sharpened.

I'll look it up tomorrow!

There comes a time for all knives when sharpening is no longer enough and they need a good grinding*.

There was a bloke in a van who dropped leaflets off and collected, ground and returned knives, shears etc. - maybe someone has his no.

*I know! Absolutely no 'Carry-On' pun or phnarr in sight. I think I have election** fatigue.

I sharpen my own chisels but you need a proper guide unless you are good enough to do freehand.

I'll keep you all posted.

Years ago a bloke called and sharpened things for us but it was not that professional.
