Bike Train to central London Weds July 6th

Recommended Posts

Cycling is healthy and free. Come and join us. We leave Nunhead Station at 8am, pick up at Peckham Rye Station at 8.10 (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45am. A branch line leaves Denmark Hill station at 8.10 and joins the train in Burgess Park at 8.20am. Everyone welcome.

From Blackfriars we take riders on individually ? so far we have taken people on to Kings Cross, Faringdon, Mayfair, Hyde Park and the Tower. Return rides are arranged personally. Unlike the train we don?t leave anyone stranded in London.

Our route takes us through two parks, up a traffic-calmed backstreet, along the pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the segregated cycle lanes in St George?s Road and Blackfriars Road. All legal and safe.

To join us just turn up. If we know you are coming we will wait for you. For more info mail [email protected] or text me on 07842 640 207. for more info on local cycling see southwarkcyclists.org.uk

    • I think part of the problem may be that if you are a cyclist and  can see cars and pedestrians after dark, e.g. lit by streetlights and headlights, you don't realise that they can't see you when your bike has no lights and you are dressed in dark non reflective clothing. The other part of the problem may be that you just don't care, of course. ETA: Do Lime bikes not have lights?
    • It was normal cyclists, in rush hour traffic, in the dark, in the rain. Just really want people to realise it’s that time of year even more careful and to get kitted out.
    • The other consideration is that users of Lime bikes and similar, plus younger pedal cyclists, probably don't view themselves as 'cyclists' as such and so don't get kitted out or even consider that they need to. I also agree that earlier nights are another factor for the casual or hire bike user more used to cycling in the summer. I don't think I have ever seen a hire bike or scooter user wearing a helmet or reflective gear- presumably that is because the bike is just viewed as a transport tool for short term use and users do not want to be encumbered by any of the safety gear? Before anyone jumps on me for anecdotal evidence and speculation, this is just what I have seen round here, there may be hordes of similar users elsewhere that are kitted out.
