Processing times for these applications are up to 6 months, though typically 5 months.

They won't automatically send your passport back and you need to request it using this form: https://eforms.homeoffice.gov.uk/outreach/Return_of_Documents.ofml

They will take around 4 weeks to send your documents back

You can apply for British citizenship 12 months after your Permanent Residence Card is issued

The 1 year is actually between the date you established PR (I know this isn't the correct wording) and the date of application for citizenship. So if I submit evidence for PR based on Jan 2011-2016, and I get my card back by Jan 2017, I'd be able to apply for citizenship straight away. They record the date separately on the system. The question comes up periodically in this thread and the answer given is consistent. So choose your 5-year evidence period accordingly, if you want to apply more quickly.

While this is true by the strict reading of the law, I've found that some Home Office caseworkers are refusing applications anyway on the basis that the 12 months unrestricted residence has not been demonstrated by the PR document for the full 12 months. Very frustrating.

    • Errr the signs on the fences....there were signs telling people how long the disruption was going to be under the original plans (diversions of public footpaths etc) and now the council has attached a new one over the top telling them that Brockwell Live are responsible for remedying the problems and the fences will be up "until further notice". I suspect they are going have to re-seed or re-lay large swathes of grass and that requires some time to bed in so I suspect the Brockwell Wall will be up for some time. If you want to go look yourself head on over to the BMX track at the top of the hill and you will find one of the signs there - I was there today.
