Am still trying to persuade my boyfriend of 6 months to meet my parents. He's clearly scared by the prospect. Probably doesn't help that my dad had told me to tell him that while he was making me happy he would be forever in his debt, but if he ever made me unhappy he'd better be ready to pack his bags and go back home (he's from east europe).

On meeting a boyfriend of mine when I was at university my dad took him aside and told him if he didn't learn to stand up to his daughter every once in a while I would never respect him. I was really offended at the time - but with hindsight he had a point, the boyfriend in question was decidedly wet!

I don't recall him saying anything embarassing to the other boyfriend of mine he met, but my mum did cut that one down to size when he was bragging about his first class degree compared to my lowly upper second class one by asking (fake) innocently wasn't his degree from a polytechnic. That one I did just laugh about - said boyfriend used to tell me I was stupid on a regular basis and deserved everything he got. Lord knows I was hopeless at defending myself against his regular criticism. Even his mum used to tell me not to put up with his behaviour.

My eldest daughter has had two serious boyfriends....I have taken each for a drink and pre arranged to meet some old army colleagues who proceeded to tell some very tall tales to each other during the course of the evening....

Works a treat!

My first girlfriend's father had a Meremma (sp)which is a fairly fierce beast...it used to sit and grin at me from about 9 inches away, the grin widening if I moved a muscle.

I learnt an awful lot about self control in those sessions.

    • It was a reactionary post and inappropriate when talking about a real case and a real person who was harmed.  London streets are generally pretty safe.  Sadly violent crime happens from time to time, as it always has.
    • Do tell, CPR Dave, what the spiteful jealous stuff is - I'm intrigued.  Agree - Burnham is a top class communicator (polar opposite of Starmer) he'd do a great job of uniting the party. I still think Wes Streeting has the edge, though I'm sure he has more enemies as well.
    • This is a huge part of the problem.   Starmer is only interested in himself, not in what is best for our country.    There's a litany of stuff he's done for spiteful jealous personal reasons which has damaged the nation enormously. Burnham would be a much better leader than of the other dross left behind when Starmer goes. To inflict a worse leader (and PM) upon us for his own selfish reasons would add to the problems and be entirely in keeping with his woeful premiership so far.
    • I heard today there was a burglary in Lacon Road yesterday evening between 20.00 - 22.00,  apparently the owners were home at the time & thieves got away with electrical items along with the owners car!  Wtf!   Anyone heard anything else?
