Hi emc.

I spoke to the DVLC about this issue.

You would normally recieve a reminder from the DVLC. when it is due for renewal

Have a look here. It explains what to do if you do not recieve a reminder.

Not clear if your licence is still valid. You will need to contact them.

I just got my renewal notice through the post. It says that you can keep driving while the new one processes but do need to send it in. The problem will be that your licence can't both be on holiday with you while you rent the car and with the DVLA being processed.

There is a space on the renewal form to say that you can't return the licence because you've lost one/both parts of it. I genuinely have lost the photocard part so I spotted this. I'm not sure whether you could use that as a loophole - request your new licence from DVLA saying that you've lost the old one while actually taking it with you?

Other problem, of course, might be that the rental company won't accept it.

    • Yes, except round here is started in early September, through October, in all that means fireworks season is now 5 months of the year.  Again, what is the attraction in startling random bangs. Why do people think this is okay?

    • Ahh, the traditional smell of the BT air fresher, hint of urine, used to stop people spending hours in the phone box and queues forming.  Although it is disgusting that people feel its their rights to treat a utility as their own personal litter bin and urinal. 😔
