thanks MB. and sue - looked at that website there's 19 ways to prune. now its scary.

It does give you an easy guide at the end which it says you can use on any roses.

If this makes you feel better, some years ago someone did a controlled study of pruning roses. It found that just lopping the tops off with a hedge trimmer had just as good results the next year as carefully pruning every stem individually above an outward facing bud :))

Yes this is a thorny subject! Gardeners all seem to have their own specific tips and techniques. So I do feel your pain - as well as the scratches on your arms...

I would always suggest watching a good YouTube video for home learning. Good old Alan Ticthmarch can be relied on for some good advice I feel. Try this one - it's short and sweet. Good luck.
