I really don't see the issue at all, there are always way's to do things even when money an issue. The analogy with the ticket touts really doesn't fit. Friends of mine were in Australia travelling when the Sydney Olympics was being held, they took employment on the Olympic site and got to see loads of events as a result!

If someone has tickets to the Olympics, not being able to afford to stay within a few miles of the site is not going to stop them being able to go to the Olympics - we do after all have pretty good public transport which runs late into the night and some is 24 hours!

Londoners will only give up their homes and accept the risk / hassle associated with that if it's worth their while.

a spare room could always be let but people choose not to for whatever reason. There is still risk and inconvenience associated with renting a spare rooom.....if people choose not to let their spare rooms for usual rent as a matter of course, why would they when the Olympics on?

Sean, if someone owns a rental property, it's probably a simple choice of continuing to let to their existing tenants, or booting them out to profit from the Olympics. The former is the right thing to do, but it doesn't help the problem any more than the latter.

Renting a room out - yes you could rent a room out for the regular going rate, but as Clare says... if you have a spare room and are willing to have a lodger, why wouldn't you be doing it already?

Re : owning a rental property - I was thinking more along the lines of if it was being vacated rather than booting someone out. But if it was being vacated in the same period would you jack up the rents?

As for letting a room - letting a room for a few weeks is completely different to doing it full time. Doing it during the olympics allows a bit of extra cash in and the chance to meet people from around the world at a time when there should be a collective carnival atmosphere - all in the knowledge that it will all be done in a few weeks

It's not for everyone (just like moving out for a few weeks) and I'm not saying people SHOULD do it - it's just an option

I just can't reconcile the constant moaning about rip-off britain (SOMEONE ELSE DOING IT TO US!), only when it comes down to it the same people are the ones who are too happy to jack up prices (JUST GETTING A FEW EXTRA BOB). I'm not surprised by it...

    • tried the traditional beef empanada yesterday and it was amazing honestly, hotter and better than the other place (no offence!). I really don’t see the issue with having more than one of the same type of shop – we’ve got Indian restaurants, two supermarkets, two cheese shops, two pizza joints, even two paint shops! So I don’t get what all the fuss is about. Good food is good food, and there’s room for everyone.
    • I understand you access ancestry from any Southwark library computer. Or see the real post office directories in archive.
    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!
