Gunpowder Plot themed cycle ride Sat Nov 5th

This easy-paced sociable ride starts from Burgess Park. Riders leave the Park Live Cafe SE5 0RJ (beside the playground on Albany Road) at 10am and return for 12 noon. The cafe is a good place to have a drink beforehand or relax afterwards.

The route loops through inner and central London using mostly quiet roads, paths and bike lanes. There are a few sections on busy roads which can't be avoided. The exact route is here: https://goo.gl/2iMYNE

The approach to inner London will be via Walworth Green Way (I can't believe I wrote that) and Westminster Bridge and back via London Bridge and Rodney Place.

Riders will pass the Houses of Parliament (of course!), St Paul's Churchyard where four plotters were executed (why there? seems most unsuitable); Guildhall where one of the instigators was tried, and the Tower of London where most plotters were held and almost certainly tortured. It takes in London Bridge where plotters' severed heads were (probably) displayed.

Wikipedia has a section on Guy Fawkes which gives a bit of background. The traditional story of the Gunpowder Plot is one of incompetence but having read Wikipedia (unreliable I know) I feel a bit more convinced. Bruce's tour will be much more learned than that. Unreliable info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guy_Fawkes. The weather forecast, even more unreliable than Wikipedia doesn't look bad.

Ride leader will be Bruce Lynn. You can contact him for more info on 07729 279 945 or to let him know you are running a bit late.

    • As I understand it Charlie Smith did put himself forward for selection in GG but Labour members chose someone else to represent them, Liam McGrath https://southwarklabour.com/our-candidates/   It'll be interesting to see if there are other defections - surely the Greens want a drip, drip, drip of news from now to May suggesting the momentum is with them.
    • Thanks for your feedback - we always appreciate hearing from members about their experience. The pool temperature at JAGS Sports Club is maintained at 29oC, in line with industry guidelines for mixed-use pools.  This temperature has been designed to balance comfort for lane swimmers and families. Air temperature is also monitored regularly to ensure a comfortable environment for swimmers, spectators and staff. The shower Temperature Mixing Valves (TMVs) were changed in December to improve consistency, and we hope this has made a noticeable difference. If you would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please contact us directly at [email protected] or 020 8613 6500 and we'll be really happy to help.
    • One wonders if he would have defected if he had, ahem, held on to the leadership of Southwark and whether he felt that "Labour are no longer the vehicle for social justice" during his leadership election........my how quickly things change in the thoughts of a politician 😉 I think this sums things up quite nicely: A senior Southwark Labour spokesperson hit back: “Local residents can draw their own conclusions about Cllr McAsh’s swift move from Labour leadership hopeful to the Green Party, after he didn’t get his own way. While he’s thinking about his own career, Southwark Labour are delivering for residents.” One wonders if he will stand as a Green candidate in Goose Green.
    • No doubt if he determines to stand for a ward he will enlighten us - at least his track record is one of using this site to communicate (inter alia). I would suspect that (1) his personal views on traffic will have remained consistent but that (2) his views on local democracy and proper consultation will have as well.
