Fractured Rib(s)

I had a fall at home late Friday night and hit my side on my bedside table.. All very painful.

Confirmed at kings yesterday that a Rib/Ribs fractured.

Initially could not feel any movement... but now rib moves/clicks when I cough .. walk. move.

I have put this down to the swelling going down.

Was using Ibulieve (Ibuprofen) gel and Voltarol (Diclofenac) gel with Co-codamol but now given Naproxen by the hospital.

Anyone had a similar injury? How long can I expect to need pain relief ? Kings gave me only one weeks supply.

Need repeat prescription from DMC but they will not give me one without seing a doctor and they do not have any appointments. Need to wait for report from hospital then go in at 8.00 and then if a doctor becomes available they will call me. What a shambles.

Had 2 broken ribs when I've had a fight years ago it Hurst when bending for about 3 weeks .

It helps to know how to do manual handling / lifting !

If you seat and get up with your back straight you won't need pain relief as your upper body won't move

I fractured ribs and couldn't bend my body; the pain was unbearable. Don't remember it actually lasting very long. Couple of days before it became bearable. Which I spent laying down, mainly.

Of course, you have to spend some time doing nothing and letting the bruising heal. No lifting, yoga classes etc

Try arnica cream - speeds it up.

My pain is worse when I lay down / sleep. Can only lay on one side as injury is a (left) Side injury.

No visible bruising.

Naproxen is helping but wears off during the night so wake up in agony and cannot get back to sleep.

Hospital told me to move about as usual and not to sit around. Have advised be 4-6 weeks for pain to ease.

The pain is getting worse day by day. Cold spell is not helping much. Just feel like staying in, in the warm

but need to keep mobile.

Sorry to hear that fox. Get plenty of rest. Do you have people nearby who can help with shopping, etc?

The DMC curse strikes again. Do they still do the thing where you can see someone if you queue up before opening time? Not exactly ideal with a painful injury though (and in the cold to boot).

No appointments even if you queue..

You can call the surgery.. but you can never get an answer.

If you do get an answer it will be after the dedicated time allocated to make appointments.

You can still queue at 8.00 but no appointment on the day. A telephone appointment (no time specified) will be given.

The doctor will advise over the phone. don't know what happens if they need to see you.

All I want is a repeat prescription. The DMC is a disgrace.

ETA. What really F**** me off is if you do get an appoinment or go in there.. the place is deserted..

Sorry to hear this Fox - Naproxen is now available from pharmacists without prescription, so if you can get to a chemist that might at least help in the short term. Get well soon.

Empathise DF. This happened to me last year- you HAVE to take the pain relief in order to keep breathing properly so you don't get a chest infection- the surgery attitude is ridiculous. I was surprised at the lack of stamina I experienced. 2 months to be fully recovered in my case, but stopped the pain relief after one. Good Luck.

I was in a car accident in Morocco many years ago and cracked a couple of ribs, so empathise. If I was you, I'd wait till 6.30 and call SELDOC and get the prescription for painkillers that way. Best of luck.

I popped in to DMC just now.. They have not recieved a discharge not from Kings but have given me

an appointment for 3.15 to see the doctor so hopefully will get sorted.

There are some preparations that contain Naproxen (period Pain) but having asked my GP. Naproxen 250ml & 500ml

is only available on prescription. It needs to be taken with a gasro protect product. I take Lansoprazol.

Got an other 18 days supply of Naproxen 250ml from DMC

That's right. I have been advised by the Hospital and doctor to do Deep 10 Deep breaths several times a day to

fully inflate the lungs.. I already have a mild chest infection.

Yes - Feminax Ultra which contains 250mg (not ml, that would really do you some damage!) Naproxen and is available without prescription - has the same effect no matter what it's advertised for (it also has a built in gastro protector)! But no matter, glad you're set up now.

My tabs are actually 250mg too. Strange they are not available freely.

I feel your pain Foxy. Arnica tablets are very good to help with bruising, both external and internal. They do work as when I had a certain 'gentlemans' operation I took Arnica for about a week afterwards and there was no bruising.

Thank you for your kind concern..

.. I'm fine. can get out for shopping.. went to the pub last night..

I'm only in serious pain in the morning when the pain killers have worn off.

I'm better when I keep moving . been told NOT to sit around..

These things take time to mend.. Lucky I'm retired and don't have to go to work.

People here have been very kind.. Much appreciated..
