Hello All,

A neighbour informed me today, following the plant store next to East dulwich closing, and speculation of a new libary being built, a Morrison was expected to be built onto the site, but recently pulled out. Another M&S store is expected to be built instead!!

If my memory serves me, i remember the plant store quite ample and there is also often a mobile coffee van outside of the entrance of the station, as well as nearby sainsburys. I am hoping it will be more like the new staore on Lordship road, I doubt it would sell clouthing, but what ever we get, its a good addittion to the area, even if it serves the commuters and ED of yummie mummys found in cafe Nero :)

As long as we still get our new Grove Vale library twice the size of the current sized Grove Vale library!

It would be an amazing location for any such M&S or similar business. I was surprised Morrisons back out but I guess as a macro level they haven't a c loo about East Dulwich.

Morrisons backed out because they decided to withdraw from all 'convenience' stores - they weren't very good at it - it had nothing to do with this specific location - most recent news suggests that they may go back into this market using their Safeway Brand (which they own) - probably not in good time for this particular site.

What is the basis or evidence (other than pure hearsay or wishful thinking) for the information/expectation that a new M&S will be opening when another one opened only a few months ago a couple of hundred yards away? Seems unlikely.

Now if that celebrated workers' co-operative Iceland could be persuaded to open there, certain local people would be delighted

Actually it was hearsay from builders working at the site. In regards to the distance from the new location and the new M&S on Lordship lane, streetmap estimates at 0.3 of a mile between the two.

Hate to disappoint, but Iceland has def left ED for the moment!!

    • Did you try the emergency number posted above? It mentions lift breakdowns over the festive period outside the advertises times. Hope you got it sorted x
    • People working in shops should not be "attempting to do the bill in their head." Nor if questioned should they be  trying to "get to an agreeable number." They should be actually (not trying to) getting to the correct number. I'm afraid in many cases it is clearly more than incorrect arithmetic. One New Year's Eve in a restaurant (not in East Dulwich but quite near it) two of us were charged for thirty poppadoms. We were quite merry when the bill came, but not so merry as to not notice something amiss. Unfortunately we have had similar things happen in a well established East Dulwich restaurant we no longer use. There is also a shop in East Dulwich which is open late at night. It used not to display prices on its goods (that may have changed). On querying the bill, we several times found a mistake had been made. Once we were charged twice for the same goods. There is a limit to how many times you can accept a "mistake".  There is also a limit to how many times you can accept the "friendly" sweet talking after it.
    • Adapted not forced.  As have numerous species around the world.  Sort of thing that Attenborough features.  Domestic dogs another good example - hung around communities for food and then we become the leader of the pack.  Not sure how long it will take foxes to domesticate, but some will be well on their way.    Raccoons also on the way https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1j8j48e5z2o
    • My memory, admittedly not very reliable these days, places the shop on the block on the left hand side just before Burgess Park going towards Camberwell. Have also found a reference to Franklins Antiques being located at 157 Camberwell Road which is on that block. This is a screen shot obtained from Google maps of that address which accords with my memory except the entrance door was on the right hand side, where the grey door is, rather than in the centre.
