Builders Recommendations (or are they?)

Ruskin

Recommended Posts

We need a builder to come and quote - doesn't everybody at one time or another?

But when you read forum recommendations I do wonder if they're genuine or whether a relative has written the glowing praise in much the same way as you read on Amazon reviews. The paragraphs are packed with perfect sentences which in many cases, I'm sure are by real satisfied customers. It's just that they read as if they're not.

I might be paranoid and so, wrong - but that's just my suspicion. One ought to visit recent jobs they've done then go and speak to the owners about their experience, also knocking on doors where there's an ongoing project but it would be so good to bypass the time-wasting.

A good thing to do is click on the name of the person recommending, then you can click on the link to see all their posts. If all they do is recommend one company please report one of the posts so we can investigate it. If something seems suspicious for other reasons then report that too, feel free to send me a private message if that's easier.

There are fake reviews on here but we can't be sure which ones are fake so we do need help from users to let us know.

Some companies do ask for recommendations on the forum, personally I have received invoices from good companies that say "please recommend us on the East Dulwich Forum", which is fine however it does mean new users sign up and recommend companies which others may see as dubious.

So use common sense, get three quotes and like you say speak to customers and inspect work done, it's not time-wasting, it's doing the ground work to get honest workers. If you cut corners and simply use someone because of a single recommendation by someone random you'll get monkeys, or whatever the phrase is.

    • Hi, I am from the Southwark Day Centre and could collect some apples if I am. It too late... Bettina
    • Labour's latest Rye Lane Ward newsletter is now saying that demolition in the square will start this summer and that the wider station upgrade is expected to be signed off this year - as explained above, sadly wrong on both counts. It describes the renovation of adjacent buildings on Blenheim Grove as "successful", despite having lain empty for a couple of years, longer than the actual renovation works, before saying "the Council is hopeful [it] will see its first new occupants move in to this year". Cue desperate attempt to get at least one in before end of financial year? As for the other topic, in "November 2023, faced with a huge increase in graffiti across the borough, Labour-run Southwark council took action". Nice turn of phrase eh? Rather, after community pressure regarding years of inaction by said Labour-run council, it's finally started to do a little bit, a little late. Surely there would be more chance of resolving issues if our council could for once be part of an honest, informed discussion?
    • I don’t think anyone has mentioned Peckham FoodCycle yet, they might enjoy some apples! https://foodcycle.org.uk/location/foodcycle-peckham-saturdays/
    • Just wanted to recommend Roger from Critter Solutions Pest Control if anyone’s dealing with mice or other unwanted guests. We had a sudden issue with mice in our home's kitchen and after calling around, these guys were by far the most responsive and professional. Roger arrived on time, was really friendly, and took the time to explain what he was doing and why. He did a full inspection and sealed up some access points we hadn’t even noticed. Since his treatment we haven’t seen or heard anything since. What I appreciated most was that it didn’t feel like a rushed job or a hard sell – just honest advice and thorough work. All backed with a guarantee.  Would definitely use them again (hopefully won’t need to!) and thought I’d share in case anyone local is looking.
