These 3 cycle lanes have appeared on the West side of Peckham Rye.

They are all about 8-10 yards long.

What purpose do they searve. How much did they cost.

I asked a passing cyclist why they were there. ? She did not know.

I asked her if they helped her. ? She said no.

Have a look below.

They are to allow cyclists to ride up from the carriageway up on to the footway and vice-versa, which allows them to use a Toucan type signalled crossing (they have the cycle symbol next to the green man) to cross the road, you can just see the zig-zag road markings for the crossing in your third photo.

Edit: Just checked google maps. Yes it is the Toucan crossing by Friern Road it is to give a safe crossing point for cyclists into the Peckham Rye park.

Cost wise...not much when compared to the signals themselves which cost around ?50k with civils works to install.

The layout is not unusual in London, they are installed when it is considered unsafe for cyclists to try and turn right across traffic. An extract from the cycling standards is attached.

    • Many thanks Jenijenjen, we had just come to tell people and see you are ahead of us! Thanks for that and we look forward to posting more Dulwich History. We also have a lot of info on our website here: https://www.dulwichsociety.com/local-history
    • Beigel is a Yiddish word which has been translated to bagel - beigel (specifically in Brick Lane) are traditional, denser, and chewier jewish style bread rings, often boiled and baked in wood-fired oven.  bagel is lighter, sweeter Americanised version   in my house you’ll get beigels!  Honest is a much better restaurant than Gourmet. Quality of the produce is higher quality.
    • The original post was made by someone else, not the person whose post I was replying to! And the original post only mentioned Whateley Road (which has been clear of leaves whenever I have walked down it) and another unspecified road. My question was directed at CPR Dave, who (as was clear in the post I quoted)  said "The streets round here are a disgrace".
