Ptolemy 2C AD referred to Ireland as "mikra Brettania" in his famous work - Almagest [Mathematike Syntaxis] & the current GB as "megale Britannia"

Conan Meriadoc 4C AD referred to Brittany as Brittanie Minor & UK as Brittanie Majore

The Irish refer to Wales as An Bhreatain Bheag [Little Britain] & England as An Bhreatain Mh?r [big Britain]

The EU press [especially Germans] are regularly mocking the UK as Little Britain...more to come.

I'm good with Little Britain, it feels more accurate and affectionate.

I'm done with the crumby & pompous nature of anything else. I'm personally finding it easier to deal with our position, if I cut through the self aggrandisement of this wave of nationalism we're being swamped with, both here and globally.

In some backhanded way, I'm hoping we end up in a position based on reality, over our place in the global play that is today. All this laughable 'great nation' nonsense is like an anchor dragging us down.

This country is tiny, it's a boutique of ideas and niche products. That could be a very profitable position in itself. But the rest is harking back to days of old, and they're over, the world's moved on.

A potted history of the UK?s relationship with the EU (from the FT):

UK: Can we join?

EU: Non.

UK: Go on, please.

EU: OK then.

UK: We want a rebate.

EU: Here is a rebate.

UK: We want a single market.

EU: Here is a single market.

UK: We want EU expansion to the east.

EU: Here is EU expansion to the east.

UK: We want opt-outs on Schengen, on social policy, on the charter of fundamental rights, on the euro?

EU: Here are all your opt-outs.

[Pause.]

UK: Bye!

about right

No wonder they think, why did we bother :)

Useful article on May's position and the impact of domestic politics - she can bring down the economy but will still win the next election. It's a proper article not fake news. Could equally go in the Corbyn thread.

Same as

50% of the country

100% of europe

and 90% of the world with Theresa May!

Trump understands Her though..Maybe not able to spell her name but They do understand each other..

..difficult to deny once they holding hands..

At least T May won something! If not any election, if not the referendum (as she was against brexit little before referendum..)at least She won the race to be the first one to lick Mr trump feet..

Just remind me: Who were all the others PM rushing there forming a huge queue outside the white house??...

.....

He has improved with age (and he seems less unkempt)

Yes . To quote from the Torygraph:

"Labour has failed as an opposition, so Ken Clarke's doing their job for them...."

    • Just a quick post to say that my restaurant reviews column is now one year old. There are 45 reviews here* - mostly of local places (some sadly now defunct, others thriving). There are a couple of recipes from a period when I couldn't afford to eat out, a couple of moans about my health when I couldn't eat out on doctor's orders and a couple of reviews beyond our manor. But the main thing is that it is a free, useful guide to local dining and, I hope, an entertaining read. You can, of course, pay to subscribe or follow for free to get the reviews directly into your inbox as I don't want to spam EDF with every review (doctor says I'm not allowed spam anyway). The pictures below come from my two most popular reviews - Persepolis (new SE22 spin-off opening soon) and Norbert's, a great addition to East Dulwich. Please have a read and please consider subscribing. Did I mention you can subscribe for free?   https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/  *It would have been 46 but one review didn't run because the meal was so disappointing. I try not to be negative. To paraphrase Boyzone (or is it Westlife?) I said it best by saying nothing at all.
    • I'd like to recommend Andy - came out very last minute to help us with a rental property that was having plumbing issues. We couldn't source the problem but Andy was able to find it / fix it easily & took the stress out of the problem. We have booked him again to put in a new bath for us now too as we were so happy with this work.    Lovely fella - thoroughly recommend using! Andy's number is 07983 688 451
