social cycle ride 10am Saturday Jan 28th

This is one of our regular weekly Saturday morning rides lasting two hours. They start 10am and finish at 12 noon on the dot in the same place. They are called Healthy Rides on the principle that they make you healthy but I call them social cycle rides because they are friendly and most people chat as they go.

They are all easy-paced and use backstreets, parks and traffic-calmed by-ways. This one starts 10am from Peckham Square which is in front of Peckham Library and beside the Pulse at the north end of Rye Lane SE15 5JR.

It's a there and back ride to a bike cafe called Look Mum No Hands. There's some argument over whether it was the capital's first cycle cafe but no argument that it's one of the best. The route crosses Burgess Park, follows the Walworth Green Link, and then takes back streets to CS7 and Southwark Bridge.

Southwark Bridge has a very safe river crossing and very good cycle-friendly access to the City which is quiet at the weekends. Riders will go past the Barbican, to Old Street for a coffee break in the warm, then back the same way. Total 10 miles, route at

Amanda leading.

Everyone welcome. All free and friendly. Just turn up. The weather forecast suggests the temperature might rise to 8 by Saturday. Lucky us.

    • As I understand it Charlie Smith did put himself forward for selection in GG but Labour members chose someone else to represent them, Liam McGrath https://southwarklabour.com/our-candidates/   It'll be interesting to see if there are other defections - surely the Greens want a drip, drip, drip of news from now to May suggesting the momentum is with them.
    • Thanks for your feedback - we always appreciate hearing from members about their experience. The pool temperature at JAGS Sports Club is maintained at 29oC, in line with industry guidelines for mixed-use pools.  This temperature has been designed to balance comfort for lane swimmers and families. Air temperature is also monitored regularly to ensure a comfortable environment for swimmers, spectators and staff. The shower Temperature Mixing Valves (TMVs) were changed in December to improve consistency, and we hope this has made a noticeable difference. If you would like to discuss your experience in more detail, please contact us directly at [email protected] or 020 8613 6500 and we'll be really happy to help.
    • One wonders if he would have defected if he had, ahem, held on to the leadership of Southwark and whether he felt that "Labour are no longer the vehicle for social justice" during his leadership election........my how quickly things change in the thoughts of a politician 😉 I think this sums things up quite nicely: A senior Southwark Labour spokesperson hit back: “Local residents can draw their own conclusions about Cllr McAsh’s swift move from Labour leadership hopeful to the Green Party, after he didn’t get his own way. While he’s thinking about his own career, Southwark Labour are delivering for residents.” One wonders if he will stand as a Green candidate in Goose Green.
    • No doubt if he determines to stand for a ward he will enlighten us - at least his track record is one of using this site to communicate (inter alia). I would suspect that (1) his personal views on traffic will have remained consistent but that (2) his views on local democracy and proper consultation will have as well.
