EveryoneActive Gym

The gym now has a sign on the reception desk announcing the cutback in the provision of the free gym & swim schem, introduced by Southwark last year. The service may now only be used on Saturdays & Sundays for a specific allocated time. This seems to be a watering down of the Council's pledge to locals and was a condition agreed by EveryoneActive when they were awarded the contract. Can any of the 3 local Councillors confirm that they are aware of this and have sanctioned?

Also in Lewisham council thete is not anymore free swim and gym from last year...

Im a member in both Lewisham Fusion,Everyone active in Southwark plus Better in Greenwich.

We know very well free service does not last forever....the cut the disability benefit!!!!!Which is more important to support diisabled people and pepple in needs than have free swim and gym!

For me is fine People who training and swim for training will be able to.

Was mental in Dulwich pool!!!!I pay and i needed to leave the pool because of the free slow swimmers in the fast

lane!!!!

;)

One thing I do find exasperating is the number of teenagers in the gym at weekends who just seem to 'hang around' and socialise or sit texting on the weights machines.

I'm all for free gym and swim for disabled and over 50's or those who need to lose weight for health issues but I must confess the gym was looking more like a pick up place for bored teens.sometimes playing music loud from their iPhones.

Know what you mean. However it's down to the gym management to appropriately deal with this sort of thing. EveryoneActive, despite agreeing to the terms when they were awarded the contract, are now trying to wriggle out of providing these services and this amounts to a watering down of the election pledge by Southwark. Appalling that they have just put a sign on the reception desk of the ED, Camberwell & Elephant gyms with nothing on the website and not consulted the politicians. The local councillors are following up on this.

I see they've put a sign up this morning advising customers to buy a padlock for their lockers. Lots of new equipment, which is great, but seemingly no plans to invest a comparatively low sum in security either for their women customers in the changing rooms or the lockers.

My friend is a member at an exclusive members gym in Mayfair where everyone had permanent designated lockers. several lockers there got broken into my friend lost a load of stuff.

Sadly these things happen.

Even in posh Mayfair gyms costing over ?100 a month membership.

I don't know whether investing in new lockers would help..is there such a thing as a burglar proof locker?

Where I work ours are only activated by our staff cards- And none have been broken into since they switched to that system.

but then everyone has their own permenant locker.I know know how you'd do it at a council gym

    • Great shout. They do need the extra fat when it’s winter, but don’t use fat balls from April as they are dangerous for nestlings as the babies can choke on lumps of the fat. When it gets milder switch to suet pellets as they are harder and don’t melt (the grease is bad for feathers.
    • Rather alarmist. There is unlikely to be snow this week, but even if there is that is natural and wildlife adjust accordingly. There are fewer insects to eat due to what humans have done to the planet over the decades.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decline_in_insect_populations  In particular: Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: Agricultural Chemicals: Climate Change: Pollution: Invasive Species: There is even a case for not feeding birds due to the spread of disease through feeders, greenfinch population was decimated.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/24/should-we-stop-feeding-birds-what-happens-if-we-do-and-does-it-spread-disease   I do feed the birds but keeping a watching eye on the evidence.   And I try to grow insect and bird friendly plants including attempts at a meadow.   There could also be an argument for not keeping cats as these may decimate bird populations.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/aug/14/cats-kill-birds-wildlife-keep-indoors   You will need squirrel proof feeders and even then you may have the starlings and green squwaky things eating most of the food left out for small birds.
    • Apparently this year due to the weather there are fewer insects for the birds to eat. So please if you don’t usually buy fat balls & seeds to put out (in safe places to avoid the cats ) a plentiful supply . They really need it this year, especially with snow forecast later this week.    Thankyou
    • I hope she and the rider of the bike are ok. I feel its understandable that locals may be concerned when they see a road taped off and police presence.
