They come in through the window when there isn't an open door.

Food and food waste, basically. Keep both well covered and they'll soon leave (if you leave the door open for the dim buggers, they don't seem to have much memory of how they came in).

Ours come into a bedroom and the sitting room. No food nearby.Have devised a home made trap by using a piece of masking tape, stuck to the bottom of a chandelier with some honey on it. The tape has a clothes peg at the bottom to keep the tape dangling. Some of the honey has dripped down onto the peg. That's the only place the flies land. I'm just feeding them currently it seems. Another strategy required I think.
