It is always a pleasure to welcome Ewan McLennan to the Goose. We first came across him back in the day when a demo CD was thrust into our hand at the end of a concert (we won?t embarrass him by saying who thrust it ? oh, OK, we will ? it was his mum 😀 ) We hadn?t met Ewan at that point.

As soon as we heard it, we booked him to support Faustus ? we were still holding our concerts at DHFC at that point. After that, Ewan headlined at a couple of our club nights, and then at concerts, including our refugee benefit concert in January 2016, where he was joint headliner with Thomas McCarthy.

Ewan McLennan has, in a short space of time, come to be known as a guitarist at the forefront of his generation; a troubadour, balladeer and storyteller cut in the old style; a singer who can move audiences with his passion and pathos; and a songwriter for whom social justice is still a burning issue.

Most recently, Ewan has been working with the writer George Monbiot on a project ?Breaking the Spell of Loneliness?, which has been featured on television as well as at live gigs around the country. Tonight Ewan is appearing solo, and we are really looking forward to it.

The Foxglove Trio is a group of multi-instrumentalists who perform mostly traditional songs from around the British Isles in English and Welsh. Gathering material from sessions, published song collections and contemporary artists, these talented musicians are making a name for themselves on the UK folk scene for their beautiful harmonies, creative new arrangements and engaging live performances.

Many of you will know Ian Kennedy and Sarah,Lloyd who have been going from strength to strength since starting to come to our singarounds way back when we first began.

They are a real part of the Goose family (well they aren?t related to Nyge and Sue, obviously, at least not as far as we know 🙂 ) and we are delighted that they are able to replace Aimee and Emmie who are no longer able to sing tonight.

    • But all those examples sell a wide variety of things,  and mostly they are well spread out along Lordship Lane. These two shops both sell one very specific thing, albeit in different flavours, and are just across the road from each other. I don't think you can compare the distribution of shops in Roman times to the distribution of shops in Lordship Lane in the twenty first century. Well, you can, but it doesn't feel very appropriate. Haa anybody asked the first shop how they feel? Are they happy about the "healthy competition" ?
    • ED is included in the 17 August closure set (or just possibly 15 August, depending on which part of the page you trust more) listed at https://metro.co.uk/2025/07/25/full-list-25-poundland-stores-confirmed-close-august-23753048/. Here incidentally are some snippets from their annual reports, at https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/02495645/filing-history. 2022: " during the period we opened 41 stores and closed 43 loss-making/under-performing stores.  At the period-end we were trading from 821 stores in the UK, IoM and ROI. ... "We renogotiated 82 leases in the year, saving on average 45% versus the prior lease agreement..." 2023: "We also continued to improve our market footprint through sourcing better store locations, opening 53 and closing 51 stores during the year." 2024:  "The ex-Wilco stores acquired in the prior year have formed a core part of this strategy to expand our store network.  We favour quality over quantity and during the period we opened 84 stores and closed 71 loss-making/under-performing ones."
