I wondered if anyone w experience of autism spectrum disorders has any advice on how to be as supportive as posaible to the child who has been diagnosed and his parents? My (nearly 3 year old)nephew is highly intelligent, very chatty and affectionate - but does exhibit some challenging behaviour and has just been diagnosed as on autism spectrum (aspergers suspected but more tests to come)

I want to make sure i dont say anything insensitive or unhelpful and wondered if there were any tips that parents of children on autism spectrum would advise both in terms of relating to my nephew and being helpful to his parents?

I really recommend Freaks, Geeks and Asperger Syndrome by Luke Jackson. The author wrote it in his teens and tells the story of him and his brothers who are all on the autistic spectrum. Fantastic insight into all their lives and the writing is amazing for a teenager. Sounds like you're already a great aunt for trying to find out all you can.

Hope this is useful :)

    • Most of the groceries shops in Lordship Lane have a security presence…curious thing is I and another woman recently saw a shop lifter lift and not pay for a couple of packet of steaks, veg and bottle of wine..  Literally walked Pat the tills, one member of staff and security guard despite someone else going in front by a few people and mentioning person in question! I have to say, speechless and admired their bravado - I would not have the guts and knowing my luck, if I accidentally didn’t put something tru the till despite receipt would prob get stopped! Yes, worked with families, homeless and other people who were struggling for food so I do understand why they do it.. sad when you think about it, that in this day and age, all sorts of c people need assistance and help from community in general, food banks, olio etc….
