Daughter (2 next week) has just been diagnosed with suspected mumps. This is despite having had her first mmr jab. Hasn't yet had second booster due to various illnesses etc in the meantime. However as far as i understand it the traditional time to have the booster is aged 3 which is what I had chosen to do.

Been prescribed antibiotics. Birthday party this weekend has to be cancelled. Daughter seems ok so far, swollen neck, no fever. Doc says may get tummy ache, fever but doesn't seem too worried since had mmr. Got to try and keep five month old away. Dr says should not be contagious after 6-7 days.

Anyone heard of any mumps cases in the area at the moment? Any experiences or advice? Thanks

Just curious... how do they confirm mumps these days? Is it obvious from syptomatic presentation in such a little one?

That's terrible bad luck. I hope your LO is better soon. Were you advised to continue with the combined MMR when she is recovered, or will she receive separate singles? I'm not aware that it should make any difference immunologically... just wondered what the general practice is for such a case.

Speedy recovery xx

Thanks! The doctor thought it was mumps from the swollen neck, which is much more obvious than swollen glands you get during other infections. She put an alert out to see if there were other cases in the area and I think if that comes back positive they'll do a salivary test. We have to go for a checkup next week. Not sure about the booster jab - good question, I will ask next week but expect it will still be the MMR.

She actually seems ok (fingers crossed) - a bit grumpy but not too bad and actually eating ok still with no fever. I think it's much better to get it as child anyway - if you're going to get it - and also not so bad for women as men because of the potential infertility problems for post puberty males. Just in case anyone else gets it thought it might be reassuring to know it's not too bad.

And birthday party rearranged for following week (dr says will not be contagious after s week) so things looking up!

    • No they aren't. You're coming across as a smug, superior liberal, and that's what old fashioned voters (labour, Cons and now Reform) hate. That 'the deplorables' 'they're all ignorant racists' line is what's driving people away from the traditional parties and towards Reform.  You're as guilty of looking back as Labour. This is a new, post-europe world and we all need to come to terms with that, make do with what we have, and move forward.
    • I have sympathy with any voter, anyone, who having witnessed the last 14 years and then Labour in the last year and wonders just how can things be this bad  unless a) they voted for brexit b) voted Tory after 2010 c) is thinking of voting reform  because anyone who thinks reform won’t make things a thousand times worse after voting for the previous?  It is they who are the problem.  They are the reason the country is in the doldrums with an embarrassingly-timid Labour government  Specifically Chris mason - a not very bright right leaning stooge - large part of why bbc news has become grok-level slop
    • In what way? Maybe it just felt more intelligent and considered coming directly after Question Time, which was a barely watchable bun fight.
    • Yes, all this. Totally Sephiroth. The electorate wants to see transformation overnight. That's not possible. But what is possible is leading with the right comms strategy, which isn't cutting through. As I've said before, messaging matters more now than policy, that's the only way to bring the electorate with you. And I worry that that's how Reform's going to get into power.  And the media LOVES Reform.
