Hi, are there any primary teachers out there or parents with experience with children who struggle to write? My son who is about to enter Y1 finds writing very hard. He struggles with pencil grip and some of his letters are hard to read. His phonics and reading is all fine it is the actual letter formation and grip he struggles with (along with the patience to actually practice).

Any words of wisdom or suggestions on how I can help him? He detests it, hates me doing any kind of practicing with him- but he does need it.

Any pointers most welcome.

Your son sounds like he is doing really well i.e.phonics and reading at his age (which is still very young going into Year 1).

Is he left-handed by any chance as this can be an issue with handwriting but not something negative.

I would wait until he is fully into Year 1 and talk to the teachers about any concerns.

    • So what is the issue? You want compensation for the loss of value, or you want to expedite the matter?
    • No. What happened? I actually thought, considering it was what we used to call Guy Fawkes Day last night, the loud noises from  fireworks ended remarkably early. About 9pm? Maybe I just fell asleep and didn't hear any later ones. Do people actually burn Guys any more? Apart from at places like Lewes, where I believe they still have Bonfire Societies and burn effigies of various political figures etc.
    • The accompaniment to our "Christmas Pudding" aka Nothing-Whatever-Like-A- Christmas-Pudding last year  at The Cherry Tree was "brandy butter ice-cream." If it had ever been near any brandy, the brandy must have been waved in its direction from a very great distance. Same with butter. The ice cream tasted like bog standard "vanilla" from a catering tub. At least it did bear some resemblance to ice cream. Whereas the "Christmas Pudding" bore no resemblance whatever to any Christmas Pudding I have ever seen or tasted in my many  decades of seeing and tasting Christmas Puddings. Oh, and Cinzano Bianco. Bleurgh. My sister used to drink that. 🤢
