All our power suddenly went off at 12.30 today - we only had dishwasher on - next door is ok.

Has anyone else had a power cut? The main switch on right section of circuit board had gone off - partner then turned all other switches off ( not sure that was the right thing to do) We turned all switches on circuit off and now not sure what order to turn on again as all our notes are on the computer which is off of course! Worried about switching them back on in the wrong order! Any advice from experts? Thanks

Switch the mains switch on, then switch each of RCB protected switches on, then, if there isn't a short in doing that, switch each of the 32 amp (with power sockets on your board) and then each of the 16amp switches (with lamps) on. That way, when the board shorts again, you will know on which circuit the fault lies. Once you have isolated that, keep that circuit off and you should be able to have all the others switched on OK. You can then check what might have triggered the problem, it's probably an appliance, but remember that many appliances (such as computers and TVs and phones) can be 'on' at any time. If nothing triggers the problem, then the appliance (or whatever caused it) may already have burnt out and be dead to the system. Nowadays boards are made to be very sensitive, so it may be quite a minor problem which has triggered this (possibly with your dishwasher as that's what was running). If you know which circuit that is on already, switch that on last in sequence.

If you can't identify the problem yourselves (look for e.g. burnt-out plugs), then you will need an electrician, who will have circuit testing kit.

The first bank of switches is probably for downstairs power, the second upstairs.

    • Your point?  Why did you buy it, don't you have a mind of your own??
    • Me and my wife went to Holland & Barrett yesterday and bought some protein powder for our 16-year-old grandson who is going to the gym at The Dulwich Leisure Centre regularly with his friends. We chose a different brand for him as his usual was unavailable and noticed that it had 18 on the packaging. When we checked with the two assistants they just asked if he had taken it before and when we said yes, they said that it was OK for him.  Doing some research online today we now know it is not safe for him and can cause kidney damage.  We didn't know about this before as his friends were all taking it too so we thought it was fine. Those assistant mislead us and that's very wrong of Holland & Barrett, they just wanted the sale of £13.50. We will be making a complaint to their head office.
    • It's standard procedure by all accounts.  Airports are very different to routine policing.  Obviously they may reconsider procedures particularly due to the negative publicity. Sadly social media (and streaming) has facilitated fake news, mistruths, toxic behaviour and hate crime. As for banter and irony, I know too well that what I think is a funny comment on this site may be misinterpreted.  Lineham has quite a long history of saying things that many will find offensive.
    • I don't think they were armed specifically  to arrest him. I think airport police are routinely armed? However I agree the rest of it was absolutely ridiculous and completely out of proportion to the supposed "crime". The Met commissioner had it right.
