I've posted something like this before (a few weeks ago) elsewhere on the ED Forum but it got shifted to biz and trades, but this isn't a trade or really a business, so I'm thinking maybe The Lounge is the right place.

In case you didn't know, spring may have sprung, and the Brockwell Lido opens the pool this weekend. The Brockwell Lido is holding a free open weekend to mark the start of its 2011 swimming season on April 2 and 3rd. Swimming will be free to all comers, and there will also be a range of free poolside activities and taster classes in the studios. Personally, I'd bring a wetsuit as it hasn't been all that warm yet - but a "shorty" would do and Decathlon sell them for under 20 quid.

That's the big news and maybe it sounds like business. But we represent a user forum and for us it isn't about selling tickets. We set up a forum to improve services. So it's about community. And the Lido is year round and is about more than the pool for 6 months. There is also a really nice gym and spa there, there are loads of interesting classes and there is also Whippersnappers who run activities for kids as well as martial arts classes. Whippersnappers have been around since 1994 and just had their Talent Show final on Friday! The winner was ... Abdoulie!

Some of we 'dry side' users recently started our Facebook forum to better be able to get to know each other as well as feed back (both positives and negatives) to BLU (the Brockwell Lido Users Group which tends to the 'wet side' or pool or pool-related like the very nice cafe there) and to Fusion, who run the whole place on a long lease from Lambeth. So these are basically community campaign pages inasmuch as we felt changes were needed but we weren't being heard terribly well. The other good news is that Fusion has hired a new manager in to run the place and he reads our wall. He also comes from a sport background and isn't just a corporate vendor with a degree in business administration, which is like oasis in a desert!

It's always hard launching something like this and getting attention, so check it out and give it a "like"! It helps us get taken more seriously by management. If you're on Facebook, that is. You don't need to be on Facebook to look at the stuff but if you are, you're welcome to add your comments!

    • Another recommendation for Dulwich Test and Services Centre. Only been using them for a couple of years but wish I’d found them earlier
    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
    • It's not really though, is it. It's practical.  At least we're allowed Christmas lights.
