Yesterday, while having my car washed at the Chesterfield Road carwash, a painting that was in the back of my car was removed so that the interior could be cleaned. By mistake this package was then put in someone else's car (a blue Renault, possibly with a disabled badge) which was then driven away by the owner. The parcel, a rectangular brown paper package just back from the framers in Lordship Lane, belongs to my boss who bought the picture in Amsterdam and it is irreplaceable. Needless to say I am in a very awkward situation, and hope that the blue Renault owner will notice the unexpected package in his car and return it to the carwash.

If anyone could throw some light on this, I would be very grateful if you could contact me.

SL, you have started another thread on this - might it be better to just have one thread as when I read your post on the other thread, which was a lot further up than this one, I had no idea what you were talking about!

Presumably the carwash is responsible for the loss (not that that's any comfort if the picture is irreplaceable) and also possibly the police may be able to trace the other car if anyone can remember any part of its numberplate or any other distinguishing features of it?

Hope you get the parcel back, anyway.

    • It is most likely gas, with what looks like a stop cock, and although the pipe may well have been isolated later from the supply you should get in a gas safe engineer to remove it. At worst it might need to be capped off beneath the floor boards. Don't interfere with it yourself.
    • Sorry, I know this isn't strictly an East Dulwich topic but as there are so many late-Victorian properties in the area I wondered if anyone has seen anything similar in their house and can advise. We have what looks like an old gas outlet on the back wall of our daughter's bedroom which we'd like to remove, but we weren't sure whether it's safe to do so. Do I just call a registered gas engineer to check it out? And is it definitely a gas outlet or might it be something else? It's at floor level so maybe electricity but it doesn't look like any electricity outlet I've ever seen! Has anyone had any experience of dealing with something similar?
