People vs. Borders - Migration Film Night ? Free Film Event November 14th?@ 7pm, The Ivy House Pub

Recommended Posts

Save the date for the return of our popular Refugee Film Night at the community-owned Ivy House Pub. Following the success of last year?s film night, we are back to share a diverse selection of innovative short films underscoring new perspectives within the migration debate and raise funds for local refugee organisations. These films highlight the unique experiences of teenagers, women and children.

Don Flynn, former Director of Migrants? Rights Network will be present for a discussion on the refugee crisis, and the rights of migrants in a post-Brexit Britain.

Films:

Oksijan - Edward Watts (UK 2017) (18 mins) (Official Selection of 2017 BFI Film Festival)

The incredible true story of a 7-year old Afghan boy who finds himself trapped in a refrigerated truck with 14 other refugees as they are smuggled into the UK.

Miracle Life ? Peter Snelling (UK 2016) (9 mins) (Winner of Best Documentary: 13 and Over at this year's Into Film Awards)? A creative, funny and honest portrait of the lives of young refugees in Hull.

Set Her Free: Margaret?s Story ? Priya Sundram (UK 2016) (4 mins) (Premiered at the London Feminist Film Festival) A short animation highlighting the experiences of refugee women, many of whom have survived sexual violence and torture, who are detained in Yarl?s Wood.

Boat People - Sarah Wood (UK 2016) (22 mins)

Taking as its starting point the historic version of Britain as a seafaring nation the film asks the question if displacement has become the norm rather than the exception.

Azure - Sarah Wood (UK 2017) (7 mins) Text by Ali Smith

Aamir - Vika Evdokimenko (UK 2017) (17mins)

Thanks to refugee and migrant groups and the engagement of TV programmes such as Reggie Yates? The Insider: In a Refugee Camp, Exodus: Our Journey, The Refugee Diaries and many others, we are becoming more aware of the plight of people who need support and a place to call home.? If you want to learn more and are interested in building a better understanding of how we can come together as local communities, come along to our free film night on November 14th.

Event hosted by Southwark Refugee Response, a volunteer community supporting local organisations in their work to help refugees and asylum seekers. We strive to engage the community as well as raise funds to support local refugee organisations.

    • I can recommend Dulwich Village. Quite quiet yesterday.
    • It's Christmas. People are sending presents they've left to almost the last minute,  and returning stuff they've bought online for presents and then  regretted. That's on top of all the usual transactions. The Post Office only has a max of four people on the counter, if you include the one nearest the street. They can't suddenly magic up more space! I imagine going when they open would be the quietest time, but what would I know?
    • Post Office this time of year…I’ve seen shorter queues for Hyperia (new Thorpe Park ride 🤣) Christmas may have been and gone by the time I get to front of queue but wish me luck. Day 3 off tryin! What’s goin on?!
    • Yes Aroma Lab is brilliant. They also work with an app called Paace which lets you save money on your coffee just by getting your steps in! I got a flat white there for £1.50!
