A primary school admissions question

Hi,

I am a lurking reading of the forum rather than a poster but I now have a query about schools and have noticed some of you really do seem to know your stuff so hoping someone can help me.

I applied for a place for my daughter this year and after a huge debate put my list in and got my first choice but am now having serious doubts. As I put and got my first choice am I still able to go the waiting list for another school and if so how do I do this.

As far as I know, if you got your first choice then it's the end of the road for you. If however you got a second, third...etc place then you could still stay on the waiting list for any of your higher placed schools. The only alternative is to apply to go on the waiting list for the school you want once term has started and you'll go on the list based on your distance to the school.

Hi Jaffe. Always good to find out what your options are, but I'd be interested to know what has made you change your mind so much. Unfortunately it's impossible to know if a school is right for your child until they attend. And two people can give very different views of the same school. If you want to change, I'm sure the Admissions team at Southwark would be very helpful. It's meant to be parents choice after all, and many children move around in the first year. What i do know is when you join a waiting list, your place is determined by the Admisdions criteria, so you will go above those who live further away.

I would hsve thought you can cancel the place and go on a list for elsewhere

But you might struggle to get s place somewhere else unless you live VERY close

The la has a 'choice Adviser' (sic) who maybe can help

I was offered a place at a very popular school 15 mins walk away, after the first term. A neighbour was also offered a place there (from being 9th on the list) and at another school 20 mins walk away. It really does depend on where you are on the list but there is a lot if movement in the first term.. In my experience schools are quite good about telling you where you are on the list. It's also a good idea to keep regular contact with the school so they know you still want the place. Good luck!

If you do not get your first choice then you automatically go on the list for schools higher up in your choices. If you get your first choice then you are not automatically placed on any waitlists but you only have to ask and you will be placed on the waitlists. Good luck.

Yep, as Mrs Lotte says I think you can still be added to other waiting lists if you ask Southwark - and you would even leap frog others on the waiting list if you live closer than them. Everyone now wants to know why you're having doubts though!
