Please remove <> from site links in email notifications (links not recognised)

Recommended Posts

Email notifications about new replies show links to the forum in the form of:

, i.e. the address is enclosed within the "" characters.

This means the link fails to be recognised as such (i.e. it is not clickable) in some email apps. I have seen it with the popular k-9 email on Android but I understand it also happens with other clients.

Could you please remove the "" characters, so that links are recognised correctly?

Thanks!

IANAA but ...

a) Surrounding fully specified URLs with angle brackets is actually a long-standing convention, and has its justifications. See for example https://www.w3.org/Addressing/URL/5.1_Wrappers.html. I use them myself around URLs in plain text emails and newsgroup posting, to protect them from line breaks or inadvertent conjunction with surrounding text..

b) I doubt whether Admin will want to delve into Phorum source code, or mess about with it, should he find what looks like the relevant bit.

c) If you search for 'angle' in Github k-9 issues, what you're complaining about has been flagged. I suggest monitoring there for the time being.

Yes, I did look at the open issues on the k9 github page. This was first reported in November, and the case hasn't been assigned (i.e. AFAIK no one has even acknowledged it ): https://github.com/k9mail/k-9/issues/2922

I also tried with Maildroid, and I get the very same behaviour.

I am reluctant to try other clients because most other clients store passwords or messages in some way ( https://androidforums.com/threads/email-which-apps-keep-it-private.935578/ ).

What is the experience of other forum users? Do links in email work on mobiles? If so, with what app?

I'll see what I can do. I would recommend the Gmail app on Android, I've tried various others and they all have their foibles but I find this works well and you don't need to use a Gmail email address as your main account.

Thanks. It will be a cold day in hell before I use gmail, mostly because of the privacy considerations outlined here: https://androidforums.com/threads/email-which-apps-keep-it-private.935578/ but of course YMMV and I appreciate I am a minority, since gmail is so widespread.

AquaMail recognises the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kman.AquaMail&hl=en_GB and is privacy-friendly.

Thinking about it, I wonder if removing the "<" characters might cause the text to be broken across multiple lines in other clients. Mmm...

We will be outside Downing Street today from 1pm, banging pots and pans to symbolise the famine Israel is deliberately inflicting on Palestinians, and to protest against Keir Starmer and his government’s complicity in genocide. • I would say Franco Manca had a few branches long before the East Dulwich one - that one took ages to open because of all the interior work they had to do to the old Black Cherry/Draft House layout When I walk past Bill's in Lewes now it still looks like the original Bill's - but I would never go in there as it is in no way "local" now - just the same overpriced, under flavoured stodge they have rolled out across the  country  (that being said, the East Dulwich one has been there 10 years now - blimey. Time, eh?) Looking at random FM locations on streeview, 2015 seems to be the year they exploded everywhere (ED included)
