Hi All, I need a little help here...

My 14 month old baby has been "growing" her first lower molar for more than a month now. It looks really sore, swollen, bulbous, like a massive purple blister. She is very upset about it today and my mother in law said sometimes its necessary to lance it to come out quicker. I find this very strange, but was wondering if anyone here has any experience on "stubborn molars" and could shine a light on this for me???!!!

No idea about lancing - sounds pretty brutal to me and would not do without consultantion from doctor/dentist!

We had an awful period with the molars. Lasted about 3 months (sorry!) of very disrupted sleep. However our son went back to normal sleep when the pain had gone.

Our GP prescribed liquid ibuprofen for the pain and it really worked at night. Also we did co-sleeping during this time for comfort. And cooled teethers.

good luck!

Molars are evil.

I found Anbesol Liquid the best thing - it is a topical pain killer - ie you rub it directly on the gum where it's sore - it is non-systemic so you can still give ibuprofen too.

You have to ask for Anbesol over the counter, I have heard of tye odd chemist refusing to sell it for babies but if you read the leaflet inside it gives clear instructions for how to use on teething babies, and I was recommended it by a doctor & used it fine on both girls. My eldest at 2 used to come running when she saw me get the bottle out poor lamb - it really does give instant relief as long as you know where on the gum to rub it - easy with molars.

I was told they can take a while to break through as they as clearly much bigger & flatter compared to the other teeth which have a fine, relatively sharp edge.

Poor baby, keep up the meds & hang in there. Pleased to say the 2nd teeth seem to arrive a whole lot more easily, going by my Gappy 7 year old!

Xx

    • I can't answer your question. But on them generally: it's changed hands in the last year or so, I think. I paid £35 for interior and exterior and they did a crap job. I'll go to the one on Herne Hill (or just do it myself if health allows) next time.
    • Aria came round to fix my tub drain when I'd messed up the seal. Came within hours, fixed the tub, and ran a bath to make sure it was okay. Here's where the fun starts. While he was over, I asked him questions about the rest of the plumbing round the house. I had just moved into a Victorian home that was previously being rented. Unsurprisingly, we found another leak in the tub and a drip in the kitchen tap.  He came back the next day to put a better pipe in my bathtub and replace the kitchen sink. Painstakingly figured out how to replace the hard-to-access kitchen sink without cutting through the wood panel with the help of his builder friend, Mark. Answered all my questions and clearly knew his stuff. All this right before Christmas holidays!
