Gemma Khawaja: The Goose Is Out! The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead, SE15 3BE. Thursday May 10, 7PM

Floorspots welcome ?7 on the door

We are delighted to be welcoming Gemma Khawaja back to the Goose. She was last here supporting Alasdair Roberts in November, and we are really pleased that she is now headlining in her own right.

We first came across Gemma and her beautiful singing at Leigh Folk Festival a few years back (a great free festival by the sea which is always good for talent spotting!)

Gemma is a singer & guitarist from the Midlands, now based in Norfolk, who plays and sings traditional songs of the British Isles and creates her own songs inspired by rural poets, mythology, and folklore.

Her arrangements of traditional songs emphasise the universal stories and themes found in folk traditions and sensitively draw out the richness and beauty of the old melodies.

She is the winner of the 2013 Islington Folk Club Trad2Mad unaccompanied song competition.

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
